What do you guys think about magazine inventory for your firearms? My preference is at minimum 10 magazines per pistol, 10 per bolt rifle, and 25 per semi rifle. I'm also much more interested in repairing pistol magazines if at all possible before disposing of them. AR mags, especially 5.56, get tossed if I can't fix whatever issue they have inside of 30 seconds.
It depends on the gun, I tend to be a bit more of a collector than a hardcore do-or-die type. If the gun is something I picked up on a whim 3-4 mags seems about fine.
The instant I consider it for something like carry I up that to 6-8, ideally with a mag or two of that with some sort of +2 baseplate along with making sure I have a set of new or +10% springs in whichever mags I've designated for carry. I sometimes go more than that if I really like the system or end up getting a second gun that can share the mags.
For rifles it's similar. 6 seems pretty fair for a rifle that has a non-AR magazine, but I would feel a bit better with 8. I have around 50 AR mags (because I kept buying 10 packs) which feels like enough as I try to keep as many loaded as I can, this is to make range trips easier and give me a better idea of when I need to buy more 5.56. If I had to get into a new magazine system and I intended on running it "for realzies" as a main rifle I would want enough to load up plate carrier + battle belt + 4 backups + 2 spares. And that's assuming I have a few extras for range trips. That ends up being around 14 for me to be comfortable, but almost the same 20 count that everyone considers the minimum.
