What do you guys think about magazine inventory for your firearms? My preference is at minimum 10 magazines per pistol, 10 per bolt rifle, and 25 per semi rifle. I'm also much more interested in repairing pistol magazines if at all possible before disposing of them. AR mags, especially 5.56, get tossed if I can't fix whatever issue they have inside of 30 seconds.

It depends on the gun, I tend to be a bit more of a collector than a hardcore do-or-die type. If the gun is something I picked up on a whim 3-4 mags seems about fine.
The instant I consider it for something like carry I up that to 6-8, ideally with a mag or two of that with some sort of +2 baseplate along with making sure I have a set of new or +10% springs in whichever mags I've designated for carry. I sometimes go more than that if I really like the system or end up getting a second gun that can share the mags.

For rifles it's similar. 6 seems pretty fair for a rifle that has a non-AR magazine, but I would feel a bit better with 8. I have around 50 AR mags (because I kept buying 10 packs) which feels like enough as I try to keep as many loaded as I can, this is to make range trips easier and give me a better idea of when I need to buy more 5.56. If I had to get into a new magazine system and I intended on running it "for realzies" as a main rifle I would want enough to load up plate carrier + battle belt + 4 backups + 2 spares. And that's assuming I have a few extras for range trips. That ends up being around 14 for me to be comfortable, but almost the same 20 count that everyone considers the minimum.

I've never heard of any probs from the HS2000 series to XD to XDM to Echelon either. Probably user error if anything went wrong.
The XD series are widely known for being fragile guns. They have a fun failure mode where the slide becomes inoperable and if there is a round in the chamber, there is no way to clear it without an armorer level repair.

No one who is serious about shooting uses or recommends XDs.

Yeah, and Glock 23's KB'd all the time I guess too. I looked around and basically saw one post about it and a bunch of others saying that it's a suspect 'failure'. I don't see anything saying it's widespread.

Any sources that I missed?

Today we stumbled on a man willing to make the XD his hill to die on. Wild times we live in.
As a fellow grip zonner I have had no issues with a xdm 3.3 in 45.
Always thought it shot pretty good.

Grip Zoner is quite good. Kek. I enjoyed mine's ease of cleaning and take down method. I'll grant it that. Any gun marketed as an EDC or combat pistol that is using rollpins or retaining rings is gonna be a no from me dawg.

The safety is literally held in place by wear items on the XD. I don't particularly like the height over bore either, and I think all that mass isn't just a cost saving measure but intended to slow the slide on recoil to make it bareable to shoot.

While it may be comfy in the hands for many, it objectively lacks the features and design to make it appropriate for defensive use or high roundcount training.

Anytime I’ve heard one mentioned to people who train a lot and have seen people try to put high round counts on them.

Go try find examples of high round count guns.

I know a lot of people who shoot a lot and nobody uses them or has anything good to say about them. I call that a clue.

I haven't seen anything really much about them at all, pro or con. Certainly not bad down to say Taurus 24/7 level.

Massad Ayoob over a long time vouched for them.

I know he's a shill, but I searched around and just don't see anything massive against them like I'd think if they commonly failed deadly.

To be fair I thought XDs were cool because Resident Evil 4 made it the most powerful semi-auto handgun in game.

Blacktail/XD was pretty fun to use in that game.

been a while since i've worked on S&W automatic pistols, but the HS2000/XD i've used and put hands on, and the departments that authorized them never really reported any issues other than being ammo picky with some hollowpoints and the XDM having a sticking grip safety issue that followed it for a while.

i've never heard of them being "fragile", either professionally or at the places/events i've shot at or classes i've attended - on the contrary they have pretty good uptime. what are the details of this "armorer-level repair"?

And it's just fucking gay. How do I know? I had an XD full size in 9mm and 2 XD-S's, one in .45 and one in 9mm.

Why would I do this? Because, as I've demonstrated repeatedly, I'm gay and retarded.

That's why I bought my first XD.

I'm still cringe as fuck. I have a custom 1911 from Ned Christiansen coming in soon. I only had to be on his waiting list for 15 years before my turn came up.

I mean... Just look at it. I'm not sure I've ever heard one recommended by anyone ever. The one I bought as a niave retard was a dud.

I don't even remember the last time I've seen an XD. Seemed like everyone and their mother owned one in 2010 and then it just sort of silently went away. I never owned one, I was just one of the immature jackasses that sees "Grip Zone" stamped on them and starts laughing.

When Springfield began selling it and people discovered it was Croatian I think, because nobody knows where Croatia is, there was a heavy stigma against it despite it being their military's sidearm since ~1999. I disliked it because it just looked so fucking tall and more blocky than Glock.

I worked with someone who owned one as his main carry piece who swore by it. I remember not caring for it when I fired it, but it was also chambered in .40 which I've also never cared for. I've never fired their 9mm or .45 models. I was just surprised to see them mentioned again today, I haven't talked to this person since 2014ish so no idea if he still carries his since a lot more options have come out for carry since the early 2010s.

You can do that?
Either with aftermarket barrel or a gunsmith with a carbide reamer or boring tool (gunsmiths with steel reamers need not apply), aftermarket recoil spring, modified magazines, and a modified ejection port (necessary for the ejection of live rounds). You'd have to check the HK forums, there have been at least a couple of people who have done it with modified slides so you can eject live rounds, I'm fuzzy on the details because it has been years since I saw a 10mm converted USP.

In the end I'd just buy a Glock to be honest based on what @Local Hooker's requirements, can you really not wait until after the Glock tard panic dies down?

t. my big power auto is a .460 Rowland barrel and stupid muzzle brake for my MK23

What the hell does that even mean, toss it in the river and buy a different one?

Like I said the info I have is stuff I’ve heard from people who said they don’t make it through a day 1000 round pistol class and apparently there is something that can happen where the slide can become fixed in place and has to be repaired by a gunsmith. I’ve never heard anything good about these guns so I’ve largely ignored them.

That's probably what I'm going to end up doing, either that or an M&P. I'm not going out tomorrow to buy it in any case.
