I don't think he's really that right. Republicans are always anti-gun, they just like to present as Our Guys for votes. When you look at their actual policy and enforcement decisions, however, it's almost always anti-gun. This isn't really a revelation, at least to anyone who has been paying attention. Frankly, this is exactly what I expect from the Republicans.
Yeah to be honest I never saw Branca as particularly right-wing in the first place. I'll give him credit for recommending common sense, and also to his credit he would have entirely told someone not to go to the protest, not to get into an altercation, and definitely not to do so while armed. But he also regularly tries to sensationalize anything gun and 2a related, good or bad. Kind of like that thing going around where people are posting the collage of Tim Pool saying 'THIS IS A CIVIL WAR NOW' that has posts in it from like 6+ years ago. Branca also got sucked pretty deep into Rekieta's degeneracy so I hold him at a far distance from right wing values if he was willing to condone that utter travesty.

Blackpowder loads can often be more powerful that "cowboy" loads because it behaves differently than smokeless. for example cowboy loads in .45 colt are very anemic, basically a pop gun at that level on a good day you can even see the bullets flying towards the target.

I just wanted to add on that blackpowder is indeed a lot more powerful than I used to think; Everything Black Powder got a revolver to put out a 45 colt 250 grain round at about 1070 fps, and a 200 grain bullet at about 1150, which surprised me a lot considering that's effectively modern 45 ACP +p velocities. The old ways are still strong without a doubt, and humans have always been very good at killing things, even if the methods were less advanced.
