Former British Army officer and mercenary Simon Mann, who was part of a coup attempt in Equatorial Guinea in 2004, has died of a heart attack while exercising, friends confirmed.

The 72-year-old made millions of pounds from protecting businesses in conflict zones before he took part in the failed attempt to overthrow the west African nation's ruler.

Mann was sentenced to 34 years in prison on arms charges and later said he had been the "manager, not the architect" of the scheme.

In 2009, the ex-SAS commando was pardoned, released and given 48 hours to leave the country.
The plot had been an attempt to overthrow President Teodoro Obiang Nguema - at the time Mann and co-conspirators said the aim was to install exiled opposition leader Severo Moto.

It was uncovered after police in Zimbabwe's capital Harare impounded a plane which had flown in from South Africa.

Mann and more than 60 others were arrested, amid claims they were mercenaries.

They said they were providing security for a mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mann attended private boys' school Eton before studying at Sandhurst Royal Military Academy and then joining the Scots Guards.

He became a member of the SAS - the army's special forces unit - and rose through the ranks to become a commander.

In 2011, he said the attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea - which saw him arrested with fellow mercenaries after trying to load weapons onto a plane in Zimbabwe - was foiled by the CIA.

After serving three years of his 34-year sentence in Zimbabwe, he was moved to Black Beach Prison in Equatorial Guinea.

Speaking in 2011 about that move, he said "friends, family, and enemies" had told him "if that happens, you have had it, you're a dead man".

After being pardoned and released, he expressed regret for what he had done, saying that "however good the money is", the moral case "has to stack up".

Obligitory:

Since the Absolute Mad Lads episode got linked, here's Dank having a chat with Mann:
And here's Dank talking about the news of him dying.
The BBC picked out the worst pictures for Simon. The main one isn't even what he looks like. Meanwhile some Scottish man is able to get some better shots. The compentcy crisis is real.

wasn’t there some rumour that Executive Outcomes were the tool of the uk government for running black ops and it was about putting someone in office who would allow the access to oil?
Either way, no coups allowed without CIA approval

The coup attempt that got Simon caught was partly funded by a Thatcher....

He certainly didn't live a boring life that much can be said. One would think that that a man with a history like his would've had a better chance of overthrowing a government in Africa. Looks like he got caught before the whole thing got off the ground.

Turned out the CIA collector network was better placed and the State Department was less sympathetic to his activity than he believed.

What is never reported is that EO stabilized Angola and Sierra Leone before being ordered to leave in favor of a UN peacekeeping force, after which both countries faced their legendary humanitarian disasters.

They were also poised to end a rebellion in Papua New Guinea before either the PNGDF commander got paranoid that they would replace him (or he was convinced of that by possibly Australian government representatives) and arrested the in-country EO representative, Tim Spicer.

The media likes to make a big deal about how morally problematic "mercenary" operations are in places like Africa. However, they always completely omit the context which has made them a necessary feature of warfare in Africa for the last 70 years -- incompetent, corrupt local forces facing brutal tribal, international Communist or Islamic extremist forces.

These outfits bring professional training and prevent far more human rights violations than they commit. Even Wagner, which I have no love for, instills a higher level of professional conduct via their training of local forces than is generally available in an average African military.

Ha, retard. Practically no one these days drops dead from an exercise induced MI unless they are a moron that literally ignored all the symptoms they had. It is possible he died from a massive plaque rupture suddenly which lead to sudden cardiac death, but that is very unlikely. It's far more likely that he had plenty of symptoms, ignored them, and died from acute stupidity. He'd be alive with a few stents or CABGs and a bunch of meds, he likely would have lived another 5-10 years assuming there was nothing else wrong with him.

This is why if you aren't dirt poor, or at least have basic insurance, if you get chest pain when exercising, get winded more easily for no good reason on a regular basis, notice a significant change in your ability to do things that you used to do easily, get pain that radiates up your arm, neck, or through to your back, notice other changes or self-imposed restrictions so you don't trigger pain/can't get catch your breath, etc... when doing things, go to a fucking cardiologist or if the symptoms started suddenly and are getting worse, the ER. If you're fine, great, you just wasted a few dollars and some time knowing you won't have to worry about it for another 10 years at least. If you're not fine, it will stop you from fucking dropping dead, making a big fucking scene, and probably leaving the person who knows you that saw it happen with PTSD for the rest of their life.
