I thought the Game and Watch was pretty cool...If you would’ve told me this time a year ago that Nintendo would do more to mark the 35th anniversary of Metroid (brand new game) than The Legend of Zelda (Game and Watch), I’d call you crazy.

Saw that too and thought of posting it here as well. I played with three custom characters, Metroid, Link and the Win 95 cursor. Metroid didn't have anything note-worthy, only that it was a little cute how you become the baby Metroid when you morph. The Windows 95 cursor was the most interesting one, all his animations are references to Windows 95 and the names of power ups are changed as well. For example the Varia suit becomes water cooling, power bomb becomes fork bomb, charge beam becomes wireless charge, energy tanks and reserve tanks become HDD drive and SSD drive (which is a little dumb because it's wrong in the same way "TTL logic" is), missile and super missile becomes click and double click etc. Both these characters made the game a little harder because you can't see where their feet is supposed to be so you have to take guesses when jumping on platforms. Link is pretty cool as well, he uses a wand to shoot projectiles which looks a little goofy but his animations are pretty fluid. He didn't have black skin to me however, I think the picture they used on the site was taken on a dark room which makes him seem black.So I decided to check out that one Super Metroid randomizer and good god.
Two pacific pride skins, a buff furry, a random anime character and a black Link from Zelda.
Well that tells me everything I need to know.

I tried it myself and liked the concepts of randomizing the bosses, the extra custom skins were neat (for the most part) and I thought the extra randomized doors that need certain beams to go through reminiscent of Samus Returns was a interesting addition.Saw that too and thought of posting it here as well. I didn't really end up liking the randomizer however, to me it feels like this game doesn't work well with it. I tried randomizing the rooms which was a little fun at first, but I got trapped in areas with enemies that are too strong like Ridley's Lair (because I was dumb and saved there with low health, I'll admit). If you turn off room randomization it becomes a little boring because SM was made with a certain progression in mind and this sticks out like a sore thumb to me.
The only romhack that really got my interest is the widescreen patch, it's currently work in progress and there are some issues that need fixing, so it's not recommended for a first-time playtrough. For example the Metroid spawns outside the 4:3 areas in the Mother Brain sequence before he attacks her, which ruins the surprise, and some secret passages end up being revealed in a couple locations, but there's nothing that will prevent you from finishing the game.
The bug where Samus' ship wraps around the screen (0:40) is already fixed in the most recent version.

So I suppose my question is equally: are the third worlders on my torrent tracker senseless Nintendroids who respond to brand recognition over all else?
If you plan on spending money on it's it's a decent 30-40 dollar purchase.Is this game shit?

Well in that case, skip Dread and go directly to the Prime games. And then continue skipping Dread until you feel like playing a good game but a lame Metroid game. I liked Dread but on the whole found it to be a frustrating experience. The exploration is very stripped down and the movement is fast, fluid and fun until it isn't for inexplicable reasons. Whoever programmed the double jump somehow managed to make it worse than it has ever been. Still a fine game; but don't let the infrequency of Metroid releases inflate its score.I remembered Super being great but I still forgot how great this series is, Samus' movement is so fast, fluid and fun to control and the progression really is refreshingly different than most 2D games "just keep walking to the right" approach.

The world design by its very nature was too simplistic and never offered chances to get lost or explore. You were always guided in the right direction.
