This is a theory that I simply can’t get behind, given how Sakamoto has since made references and such to the Prime games in Dread and such, not to mention that he has never in any way said that he hates the Prime games, never said they weren’t canon, and in fact was a supervisor on them, with Bryan Walker of Retro saying he was extremely helpful during the development.
Just sounds like another way to slander the guy, and to big up the Prime series and act like Retro is the only devs allowed to work on it now. Almost makes me resent the Prime games at this point, if this is the sort of self-righteous mindset that it has placed into the people who worship them as being the greatest in the series (and Prime 1 is my favorite game in the franchise btw).
More than anything, he was just trying to go for a more cinematic approach, and things didn’t go too well, especially since he made the absolutely bone-headed decision to head up the translation himself, despite not speaking English that well. If there was anything that did dump on Prime, then that was unintentional, not malicious.
Course, that’s not to say that the original script is good, cause it frankly isn’t. But knowing the differences and how much was lost in translation due to his mistake does at least for me, make it a bit easier to swallow. Again, there are still stupid moments sure, but I can at least see what he was trying to do much more clearly.
And heck, some of the better ideas it had in terms of gameplay got carried forward into Dread. He’s clearly learned from his mistakes. I don’t see how constantly hating on him is doing anything other than creating more resentment at this point, and is in fact, a reason why I started falling out with the fanbase.
