I'm one of those people who'd prefer she never speak cuz it helps muh immershun, but that restriction also kneecaps the fuck out of a lot of storytelling possibilities.
Not sure what you mean by immersion but old metroid games had a story, it was more of a 'show don't tell' method. At least with the sidescrolling games. With Prime, I thought it was a great idea to have the lore be explained optionally by going around scanning everything. Don't care about any of the story? No problem! Just skip all the scanning parts and go blast some fuckin aliens, whoo!
Though I never played Prime 3 or that weird looking Prime Hunters game so I have no idea how things happened after Echoes. Also, wasn't Other M made by Team Ninja? Always thought that was an odd choice.

Reminder that this was like the 5th time that Samus had encountered Ridley (including the Prime games) after his supposed death.
If I kept killing something and saw that it kept coming back I'd probably lose my mind too.

The series needs to get past the specter of Super Metroid. Every game, even the Prime series, has been a hollow imitation of Super Metroid (and this is coming from someone who liked Fusion) and the formula is so tiring at this point.

My favorite games of the series are III, I (the original FDS game, not Zero Mission), and II in that order because they are the most distinct gameplay wise and don’t feel like any other game. Fusion is good for the story. Everything else is literally a ‘why the fuck am I playing this?’ game.

There are some weirdos out there that are working overtime to rehab Other M by making its reception and Prime 4’s development into a culture war issue.

If you don't want to watch the initial (and still very on point) destructions of Other M from back when it came out, GB's more recent video on it tries to give it as fair a shake as possible - but there's just no saving it. And I quote, "As a player we know what items we need to access an area, but Samus just seems to be oblivious, because she won't use the item we know we need to use until she "feels like it". It makes us dislike Adam because he is telling us "the experienced Metroid player" what to do, and we hate Samus because despite being our avatar in this universe she makes extremely bad tactical decisions we the player never would".
I suppose it can be debated if Samus should be submissive or not... but a supposed veteran space Bounty Hunter would never endanger their own life in a lava area just cause their "commander" forgot to tell them to put on their heat protection... And in case you forgot, THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY Metroids are horrific space parasites but imma treat this one like a baby THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY.

They essentially turned the story into an optional gameplay mechanic instead of shoving it in your face with unskippable cutscenes. While I think that works great for Metroid, I didn't like ubisoft Zelda doing it.

Never forget people like this worked at Retro during MP4's dev cycle.

Megan also had an old tweet (now deleted) about how she always believed Samus was trans, so if you don't think this development was pozzed, you might think again.
Wait a minute.

Isn't this the broad who wrote the novel that tried to make Cal's love interest Merrin a lesbian, only for her bullshit to get ignored?

Her endangering herself in the lava area was meant to be less her being submissive, and more her trying to prove something to herself, at least in the Japanese version (in which Adam doesn’t even tell her to go to the lava area and practically shouts at her to activate the Varia suit during the boss fight).

As for the baby symbolism though, yeah that was way too hamfisted, even in the Japanese version. Like, it was meant to be a point of comparison to feeing powerless, but they really could’ve gone with a different metaphor.

Yes, I believe so. Then some book author came out later and said she was pansexual to seal the narrative after buzz died down sufficiently. There were articles when FO came out praising it for bi/whatver rep. I don't think she's dumb enough to make Samus overtly trans, but we're gonna hear about it from the usuals and I expect the rest of the cast will be pozzed in some aspect or another. I've got my eye on the G.I. Jane girlboss of the companions being a hidden insufferable one.

After the second game basically said fuck that a second novel writer fucked with it again?

That sounds convoluted as fuck.

EDIT: Ah no, I checked and I mixed the FO writer up with Sam Maggs, who made the claim Respawn Entertainment said that. Nevermind, I am mixing up the retard broads. I wouldn't be surprised Fausti was involved with that whole thing, but it all got overruled in Jedi Survivor that neither was involved in.

Reading walls of text from NPCs or loredumps fucks up my immersion: that's not what I play Metroid for.
I know older Metroids had stories, but they were largely told through environment and vague implications, not reading lore logs or getting locked in a cutscene while a mothguy explains the plot.

To be clear, I'm not saying loredumps and NPCs are bad, and like I said not having those things severely limits the kinds of stories you can tell, and without more explicit story stuff you'd get way more people justifiably saying what George Lucas said up there:

Personally I like the formula (as long as there's something unique in a given game and it's not a complete copy-paste), but I hate being shut in Nav rooms to spam 'A' through a computerized NPC's bullshit, it gets in the way of me exploring and parkouring.

Reminder that Prime 4 is on Switch 1 as well and will also run at 60fps, just with lower res/muddier textures, so you will most likely be able to emulate it a week early when it leaks, at 4k
But at the same time, is it really worth playing an upcoming trashfire even "for free", even "at 4K" when you can just watch the much bigger salt mine that will come from the people who do end up playing and suffering through what it has to offer?

why are you doing this? you already told why you like metroid, if a retard tries to equate it to you disliking npc's and loredumping overall its on them to be retarded, just tell them to go back to reddit.
it's also why i enjoyed prime, being able to explore shit in 3D was really cool, especially the scan feature.

it is funny, if nintendo was actually trying to re-emulate super metroid they'd be gone and dusted with the logs and speaking shit.

Because he asked me a question, and I felt like answering.
I'll talk to who I like about what I like, thanks.
my question isn't about who you are talking with, it's why you are needlessly walking on eggshells, we ain't on reddit or groomcord, nigga.
and yes i've been seeing the retardation regarding mr.soy on prime4 in there, it's fucking ridiculous but then again, it's reddit.

Finished prime 2 echos. That game was alot harder then the first game. Not gonna lie, Some of the difficulty spikes pissed me off, but at the same time, i kinda liked the extra challenge. The backtracking was a bit too much for my liking though and going between light and dark world was annoying at times.

Not sure if this was an emulating issue, but the dark beam must be the worst weapon in the series. It only existed to open portals and give yourself light ammo. that thing did not even work on the final boss so everytime it turned into light mode, it made me cringe.

i like prime 2 the most out of the trilogy, prime 1 has better environments but 2 has better bosses that make you think about how you need to beat them. quadraxis makes you use everything you've learned so far to take it down.
dark beam is effective against light enemies and vice versa. if you got the darkburst that's also really fucking good for dealing with space pirates.

Yeah I still like 2 best, didn't try either remake tho.

Anybody who wants a decent Metroid FPS might try Alien Isolation. They even did okay with NPCs. Prime 4 is going to be a complete and total Nintendo game.

I makes perfect sense Samus would fear and hate Ridley, it ate her parents in front of her... But this fear should be overcome after her first couple of encounters, Samus having PTSD doesn't jive with her at the point of Other M, where she's a hardened warrior of years.. super shit game.

I'm fine with Samus having a character, but she should remain aloof, stoic, a loner, both her people's are dead

Classic "[Childhood thing] was always woke, CHUD!" well poisoner.
Other M contarianism's a hell of a drug.

Despite that, it still paints Samus' character rather poorly as an arrogant, emotional, stubborn idiot, doing this whole self-journey thing by proving she can be a good girl by playing pretend with the boys again in order to respect her surrogate daddy "like the good ol' days", but is mostly trying to get Adam senpai to notice her. And for what? Just to get the coldest shoulder -- or rather backshot -- in her life and being thanked for her service while he basically goes to commits heroic suicide. Worst J-drama in video game form.

There was a good idea for exploring Samus’ relationship with the Galactic Federation in Other M, but the execution should have been on someone other than a guy who writes extremely Japanese VNs when he isn’t being the Metroid guy.

Yeah, the execution was really off.

That said, in the Japanese version, it wasn’t to get senpai to notice her, but rather, it was her trying to prove to herself that she had moved past her issues of feeling powerless and the like.

But again, it could’ve been communicated way better.
