Filtered: Shooting aliens with cool weapons like the ice beam in a labyrinth.
The ice beam was pretty cool in the first game, being a double edged sword as it would halve your main weapon's effective damage in exchange of allowing you to teporarily neutralize enemies or even use them as platforms to reach previously unreachable areas.
I remember swapping it with the wave beam in my first playthrough, I kept dying to Metroids and eventually ragequitted the game, when I returned to it, first thing I did was grabbing the ice beam back and try it again.
 
I know they changed and removed some space pirate lore because it introduced a plot hole about them interacting with Metroid Prime, not sure about the rest.
Except those who actually knew the lore knew the change was unnecessary, and an example of the editors not knowing the game they were changing. Prime 3 established Metroid's enhanced by Phazon can literally "phase" in an out of tangible space, giving them the ability to move through objects and barriers. Metroid Prime was obviously able to do this in Prime 1 because it was the final evolutionary form of those metroids. The Metroid Prime was experimented on, assimilated Space Pirate tech when it fled, and phased through the Chozo barrier into the impact crater to make a home next to all the phazon (becoming the first seed guardian). It makes sense and is explained using in-game evidence.

Those who later edited the lore didn't understand any of that, and maybe didn't even play Prime 3 at all, simply reacting to the more vocal and smooth brained complaints of gamers. They didn't bother to check the other games, they just saw the Chozo barrier and thought, "oh, this must be a mistake, Metroid Prime can't have pirate weapons AND be inside the crater" without even understanding what the Metroid Prime is and what it can do.
 
The two things that strike me as obvious when looking at Prime 4 are:

A) They should've copied Mass Effect, Halo, Rogue Squadron 3, or some other sci-fi for the exploration shit, instead of copying Breath of the Wild. Have Samus fly around in her ship or drive around in a space rover she "appropriates" from the Galactic Federation, and fill the places in between locations with enemies. Lots of them. Make it a war, if you have to.

In Mass Effect 1, sure, you have some sidequests where there's a great big plain full of nearly nothing to explore, but those are the sidequest missions; in the main missions, you have a gauntlet of enemies to trudge through on your space rover. Same thing with Halo and Rogue Squadron 3 in the ground vehicle sections: you have to drive or trudge through an area full of bad guys to shoot up. Populate the general area with life, and lots and lots of bad guys to shoot. Have it be the player's decision to either speed through them with a bike, fly over them with their ship, or blow through them with a tank. Or just hoof it on-foot, since we know from other games like Super Metroid and Other M that Samus has super-speed.

Maybe you can pull off a ME3/Battlefront-hybrid thing and have command posts be under Pirate or Federation control, and you will have an easier time in some of the dungeons (read: less enemies) if you clear out command posts controlled by the Space Pirates that are near the dungeons.

You can even put in a little bit of bounty hunting by having the Federation post bounties of top Space Pirate officers for Samus to capture or kill, and the rewards would be extra life energy/missile extensions. Or have certain artifacts the Federation wants to obtain, that are not central to the main story but would still net a nice reward if Samus gets them.

B) The story of Metroid Prime, the trilogy, was always about the titular "Metroid Prime", which you encounter on the first game in Tallon IV, and who then becomes Dark Samus, whom you fight in Prime 2 and 3. The story had a nice three-act structure that was neatly paced in the three games, and it ends with Dark Samus' death in Phaaze at the end of Prime 3. It began with the Metroid Prime, and it ended with the Metroid Prime's final demise.

Making a Metroid Prime 4 makes no fucking sense, not unless you're willing to revive Dark Samus and have her be a big threat all over again. Which, obviously, they did not do. The story has nothing to do with the titular Metroid Prime, which means that calling it "Metroid Prime 4" makes no goddamn sense. They could've named it something else, like Metroid: Hunter's Revenge (referring to Sylux as the hunter) or Metroid: Dunes of Discovery.

Also, Samus' motorcycle was named after Bayonetta's daughter in Bayonetta 3, another Nintendo-made game with Marvel-esque characteristics, what with the bad guy having Dr. Strange powers fighting a multiverse of Bayonettas. Nintendo is getting awfully self-referential with these names. It's like when James McCloud appeared in F-Zero, even though that is the name of Fox McCloud's father in Star Fox.

They obviously did it for the name brand recognition. That said, Metroid Prime really is just a fantastic game title on its own, so keeping it around for the 1st person branch of the Metroid series does make some sense...

And the lore introduced with Prime 3 clearly had a basic start in Prime 1. All of that comes full circle when you learn that the meteor impacts from Tallon IV to Aether were just Phazon seeds discharged from a living parasitic planet. That's so fucking cool, an entire planet as just one big parasite, launching fleshy meteors around the universe to propagate itself. When you travel to Phaaze in the endgame you can scan a leviathan womb which has a baby leviathan gestating inside it, the infant is even on the title screen...

Indeed, but if they were going to use that title, perhaps they can make it about the Metroid Prime somehow? Like say, another one was found? Or that Dark Samus somehow survived?

It reminds me of how Lord of the Rings, the classic Peter Jackson trilogy, was all filmed in one go. Classic Retro clearly knew what they were doing in crafting the lore of the three games, and how they all fit in with each other. It was a coherent, planned story, from beginning to end.

They were just tossing shit at the wall to see what sticks. Sometimes that works; Bayonetta 3, for all its flaws, still had that charm and flair of the first two games down to a T, and some very interesting scenarios to boot. Metroid Prime 4 introduced elements that just did not vibe with the themes and feel of the previous three games. Like I said, if they wanted to rip off something that has a similar feel to Metroid Prime, Mass Effect 1 would've sufficed. ME1 especially has that similar feel of exploring the galaxy and unearthing an ancient evil that you have to fight.

To state the obvious, the lore people for Prime 1 - 3 and Hunters are probably long gone. This much should have been clear in Prime 4.
Sounds a lot like what happened with Halo. A lot of the people who wrote the original lore for Halo are long gone by the time 343 Studios sauntered into the picture.

Funny that 343 "people" got involved with two beloved sci-fi franchises and cratered them both.
 
A few hours into Prime 3 now (defeated the first hunter). Whoo boy I dunno if the same Retro staff went on to work on 4, but the mistakes are already showing up in this game. I like the idea of Samus exploring multiple planets in a single game, but why break the individual planets up and require going back to the ship there as well? It's not even fast travel like the light warps in Prime 2. You flat out can't access parts of the level without going back to the ship. Yeah there's shortcuts you unlock back to the ship but you could still have the regions on the planet connected since individually they aren't that big anyway. I will say I won't miss 3's jank motion controls that don't work half the time when I need to manipulate a switch or having to constantly scan something first so I can grapple something I already knew I could. If you love the grappling hook this is apparently the game for you.
 
A rule of thumb for games is that they're probably not great if their defenders keep using variations on tired memes like this

I see people who vehemently defend the latest slop in any medium often compared to pigs burying their faces in slop, but that's unfair to pigs, as hogs at a trough probably smell better and are far more intelligent than anyone who defends garbage aimed at The Modern Audience out of spite for "chuds" or whatever boogeyman they imagine they're railing against.

Anyone that uses this image just admits they're shiteaters and want to call you silly for pointing that out. They tend to point out they "like having fun", as if that's some high standard when the games they usually defend are the most droll, content starved generic asset flips known to mankind, and the point that "they're having fun" is supposed to invalidate every single coherent argument the opposing party has(which they have no counter-arguments for, naturally). In short, they are the"modern audience" that makes DSP look sophisticated, the exact same audience every single studio is aiming for today precisely because they have zero standards and are very proud of it. I like to think that some /v/ shitposters post this image and gunt-guard some obviously unpopular shitty games ironically, but that still makes a large portion of those who are unironic about it. I can't see anyone defending MP4 unless this is the very first Metroid game they ever played and don't know better or if they have some Stockholm Syndrome leading from waiting for this game for so long, the game is painfully mediocre to downright awful in the same way Halo 4 was. Gonna just chalk it up to the average Nintendo Drone syndrome where they all eat shit mindlessly and religiously because they have zero standards, funnily enough not unlike how nu-Halo fanbase brought up on 343 games acts. Huh...
