Maybe after another 2 or 3 attempts they'll realize people just want Samus to go on solitary, atmospheric adventures.

Honestly, I can't believe Prime 4 exists the way it does. They really keep trying to introduce other idiot characters into this franchise no one wants. It seems like such an "anti metroid" game.
I think that it’s possible to have other characters in a Metroid game, but it needs better execution than Prime 4. The characters should to be ones you interact with as part of your journey in particular situations, but not characters you are partnered with from end-to-end. But even then, the NPCs aren’t the biggest problem with Prime 4, it’s the design of the game’s progression. Every Prime game has been linear when you really look at their progression, but the other games cover it up better than Prime 4 does. Prime 4 is so nakedly a straight line of progression that it kills off the sense of exploration after you begin to notice it. The game still has good moments of micro discoveries but they are not enough to wipe away the feeling that you are being guided by the nose to the next set piece. If the next Prime game is to truly progress the series, it needs to be ready to make the world the main character and the storytelling engine itself and stop relying on cutscenes and scripted moments otherwise it truly will lose cultural relevance.

Will there be another Prime game? I heard the game bombed.

It doesn't seem to have sold well (not sure if Nintendo has released any updated sales numbers) but as a game it's fine. It just doesn't stand out as having much Metroid DNA so fans playing specifically for Metroid gameplay were disappointed. They probably won't do another Prime, the guy whose baby it was retired after Prime 4 didn't land like they wanted.

I would love to know the sales figures. All in all, upon reflection I think it can't be understated just how good the original Prime games were/are. Under a broader context it's a fucking miracle Prime 1 achieved what it did and on the first try no less. It's so hard to put yourself back in the year 2002 mindset, and impossible for those not born yet, but let's look at some hard truths.

In early 2002 Metroid was still languishing under an 8 YEAR LONG coma, it had been 8 years since anyone got a single taste of Metroid, and the last game was the legend called Super Metroid, one half of an entire genre's namesake (Metroidvania) which was still in its infancy at the time. The Metroid brand was given over to a new studio, Retro, which was helmed by a bunch of Texas barbarians who just got done making Turok. Not only was the japanese Metroid series being given over to westerners, they had been charged with making the first 3D Metroid game. Let that sink in, a mid-tier American studio of FPS creators was given the task of revitalizing the Metroid name, after an 8 year coma, following Super Metroid, and doing it via the 3rd dimension. The game should have been an outright failure considering all those variables...

If this thread existed back then everyone would be (rightfully) losing their shit expecting the next Metroid game to be a dogshit shooter made by a bunch of gaijin that completely missed the mark on what made Super Metroid so good................... and yet, it released as a masterpiece.

Somehow a bunch of Id-tier FPS nerds not only nailed Metroid's design, it also nailed its atmosphere, and I would argue it went even further beyond thanks to being in 3D. And on that topic, people need to have a healthy appreciation for just how hard transitioning a 2D series into 3D must have been at the time. All of this shit was new, it was all uncharted territory and EVERYTHING had to be altered in some way to work in 3D. Franchises like Mario and Zelda had to drastically change the way they played while also staying true to the core of what made their originals fun. It was an incredibly treacherous tight rope to walk, and so many series were unable to make that jump successfully... The fact that Retro brought Metroid back from an 8 year coma and into the 3rd dimension so flawlessly, is nothing short of astounding. When people heard Metroid Prime was coming out, they thought it was going to suck. But it blew people's balls off. I'm sure Shiggy's magic also helped, but it's worthy of endless praise either way.

Now cut to Metroid Prime 4, an entire generation removed from the original team that made Prime 1, a virtually new studio when it comes to the amount of old staff remaining. No Shiggy, but 3 amazing games in a trilogy to use as reference material. Coming off a literal remaster of Prime 1 to also use as reference material............... and then we got the fucking mess that is Prime 4. That's a pretty legendary flop. Other M was just as bad but for different reasons. The Metroid series was riding high in 2010 after a decade of classics, both 2D and 3D, only to be met with the utter gut punch that was THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY. It was a unique and different taste of terrible... but Prime 4, that's a new level of disappointing. Don't cry that it's over, smile because Primes 1-3 exist and can be played whenever you want thanks to emulation.

I hate how 7/10 today is treated like a 5 or 6. If a game is tolerable, but not bad, then a 5/10 is reasonable. If the game has its moments and can be fun, but is let down by some intrusive flaws then a 6/10 is fine. It's like in today's conscious 7/10 is treated as mediocre when in reality it should be seen as good.
Here's the problem with ratings: it's all relative to the games around it.
the minute I put a modern """7/10""" game like Cronos The New Dawn next to older 7/10's like RE5, Shadow's of the damed, vanquish
that modern 7 starts to look pretty shitty

The only thing that matters in a game: Does the game do anything exceptional that makes it stand out compared to other games?
all those older games I listed have problems, but does things you can't really get anywhere else.

was prime 4 worth the wait? no? then why fucking play it?
slapping a 7/10 on it doesn't answer that question.

I just heard a dumb nigger say the dogshit motorcycle suit from Prime 4 is "The greatest looking suit that Samus has ever had in the entire history of the Metroid franchise". I've even heard Prime 4 haters talk up that half-finished travesty of a suit, this shit needs to stop. How fucking insane can you be to think that this

The Viola suit looks like a rejected Iron Man design. Nigger is wrong for sure but he must just like the color red, I believe the Viola suit is the first suit that uses red as a primary color instead of just a helmet color.

No fucking shot. It looks fine, not offensively bad or anything, but not much is going to top the Dread Fusion suit and its Varia upgrade for me. Suit looks so clean with the white torso and accent lights.

Off topic, but I'm playing through that Super Fusion hack and holy shit I've never played anything this bad. The damage is downright obscene beyond being a meme hack. It's just so incredibly unfun to walk into a room after exploring for fifteen minutes and get one-shot by an enemy placed right after the door. Or an enemy hidden off-camera because it stops scrolling. Or an enemy hidden behind tiles in a morph tunnel. Or an enemy hidden under a drop I can't see down.

The several SA-X's (including one at the literal beginning of the game) fire on you with frame-1 reaction speed and you have such low energy that they instantly kill you. Their upgraded pathing and ability use (holy shit the XRay scope jumpscare was the chef's kiss) is completely offset by the fact that any single frame-imperfect mistake means instant death; start over, faggot, ha ha LOL LMAO. The game practically demands Z-list speedrunner abilities of the player. Had to play for a good half hour grinding resets on the first SA-X getting my walljumps off the door transition juuuuust right among other shit, because the 'normal' way you'd think to move just fucking kills you because you'll fall off the tiniest ledge frames after the door, be put airborne, then lose all momentum and die. And the whole game has been full of cheap ass "GOTCHA" moments like this. Any tension is offset by abusing savestates because I'm not gonna be able to learn your shitty hack by dying instantly, spending 5 minutes to get back to where I was, and dying instantly in the new room after trying one slightly different idea ad nauseum. And that has been the ENTIRE thing so far apart from the bosses which have actually been the only balanced and cool thing about it. Anyway.

What's just as crazy is that Miyamoto handed Donkey Kong Country over to Rare when there doesn't seem to be any reason why Nintendo should have done that. At least with the Prime games, I could see why Miyamoto would have considered letting a Western studio with experience making FPS games make a FPS Metroid game. Why he chose Retrostudios over Rare they made though seems odd, but it worked well in the end.

Does anyone here like Metroid 2 (the original Game Boy version, not the 3DS remake)? I feel that it is a pretty underrated title.

That shit got nerfed, too. The original version was basically everything in the game 1-shots you until you have 3 or more E-Tanks -- then you'll survive with like 10HP.

I didn't dislike it anywhere near as much as it sounds like you do (then again, I  was using savestates and rewind from the word go because I knew the hack's rep) but the thing that filtered me was getting hit once or twice, and having to leave the room to spend a couple minutes grinding for health amoebas.
It's literally one step shy of that "how am I supposed to learn when I instantly die every time" issue you brought up, which is an issue I have with a few recent games.

I miss when Hotline Miami encouraged indie devs to start putting instant-restart hotkeys in their games.

On my drive home from work I often see a car that's decked out with Metroid stickers. I saw him again for the first time since January and he removed all of his stickers. He must have absolutely hated Prime 4. Can't say I blame him. I still can't believe how disappointing it was.

Because the writing was already on the wall in late 99.

The Goldeneye/Perfect Dark people siphoned into Free Radical Design, whereas Retro Studios was packed with ex developer from Iguana Entertainment that made Turok 1/2.
People make games, not Studios, and Miyamoto knows this.
What Microsoft got sold in 2002 was already a husk.

It's also interesting to play Turok 2 today.
It has more proto Prime elements than most people are aware, severely undercooked though.
