He's only well known because he's a pop scientist (and not even a particularly good or charismatic one at that). He certainly hasn't made any "breakthrough" discoveries or developed any "breakthrough" theories (which was the topic at hand); he's just so arrogant that he acts as if he has.

Go back a bit further and you have Benjamin Banneker, the astronomer, and if you want more recent examples, there are Dr. Mae Jemison and Guion Bluford, the astronauts. This shit isn't that hard.
