Its so difficult to get into main characters always complaining about their parents and when we get to see them interacting, the former acts like a completely hateable shithead while the parent just comes off as tired and apathetic at worst (tho it could be easily excused given they gotta live with this brat).

Lefitsts have this bad habit of always making characters you arent suppose to like but, the problem is, leftists tend to be such unlikable people themselves with such a warped view of the world and morality that any "bad" characters they make tend to come off as more unintentionally sympathetic than the characters you are meant to like.

"Oh look how wild and rebellious she is!"

More like how much she is begging for a pimp slap across the face and these are suppose to be 90's parents? Who were still mostly unshackled from the "abusive parenting" accusation nonsense?

Nu-hu, that girl is getting her ass kicked, its borderline immersion breaking.

Is she really supposed to be Asian? She seems more like a normal brunette to me, her eye shape being more of a stylistic choice.
Her dad is Asian looking IMO and.."Pushing your kids to get good grades and overachive" is a pretty asian stereotype.

These are the kind of people who would accidently be more racist than us here at the Kiwi Farms.

You guys know how in the 2023 Game Awards, when some game called Cacoon that no one ever heard about beat Pizza Tower for best indie game of the year? Cacoon was published by Annapurna Interactive, the same publisher of this game. You know what that means, Mixtape is likely going to win indie of the year over other indie games like Mewgenics. Just a reminder that award shows are all bullshit.

Cocoon was at least something you could call a game. If Mixtape wins, I genuinely think it'll spill out of control.

Jewish nepo baby shekels are one hell of a financial drug (funding). Especially for the Dorito Pope, who just HAS to get his little wannabe videogame Oscars up to the same homosexual kosher prestige as.... the actual Oscars. It's so blatant what's been going down, the pay-for play, the asspat ceremonies, the games urinalists picking winners and losers based on payola. What a gay, and jew-influenced industry.

The only good thing about Mixtape is that it reminds us of how hopelessly corrupt the whole industry is at this point. Reviews can be bought, and they are not even being subtle about it anymore.

And it’s not just your average journalist “gamers”, it is also Youtubers who you would think would have more integrity, but they demonstrate to be just as sold out, with arguments that are somehow even more desperate in trying to defend this and earn their paycheck.

We already had that evidence with "the last of us part two" but I guess you could at least say that was a game, enjoyed by people with no taste, but a game nonetheless. But this? This is pushing it. This has less interactive than a telltale game and it is being praised as the next coming of super Mario. Or rather it was, because now nobody talks about it anymore. I guess their paychecks have run out by now or even they know that it’s pointless to try to defend this.

Either way, Mixtape is a nothing burger rotting under the hot sun, with a bunch of 10 out of 10 stickers on it. If that is not an image that fully describes how dire the situation is in this industry, I don’t know what is.

I just played this fucking nonsense because it's on Gamepass and i thought it would be like Life is Strange..

I ended up finishing it out of morbid curiosity. It is so fucking bad. The 3 main characters are all incredibly unlikeable but the protagonist especially is an absolutely horrible selfish cunt. She wouldn't have friends in real life.

Also, it's supposed to be set in the 90s and features teenagers listening a bunch of adult contemporary music from the 80s and earlier for some reason. I grew up in the 90s and we weren't listening to that shit. This was soundtracked by Gen Z hipsters.

The dialogue is wall to wall cringe.

That's how journalism works. Everything can be bought out if sufficient money or interests are in question.

Review sites (previously magazines) are launchpads for games, and they sell their reviews for the higher bidder: The public (would give them clicks and retention) or companies (would give them money).

IGN is infamous for making bad reviews of games, but that is by design: they profit more for their bad reviews (make more clicks and interactions in social media, which in turn makes them more site views, which in turn makes more people aware of themselves).

I don't believe it's corrupt, its just a matter of "what's better for my business?" type of deal...

YouTubers are worse, some even sell out for 20 dollars from Raid Shadow Legends or War Thunder or like Karl Jobst literally any sponsor can throw him a quarter and he will promote the most stupid degenerate thing possible.

YouTubers are bottom of the barrel in most cases, and they play by the same rules as companies like IGN: make entertaining content and if you cant then make inflammatory one.

Mixtape is like any other product and the marketing campaign was built on inflammatory terms that of course will provoke people.

And to be honest, it was a very well done marketing campaign because, even if the game is shit, absolute trash.... It sold very well and continues selling well because IGN and other review sites and personalities talk about it (positive and negative talk is still publicity).

I for one believe the company that did Mixtape bought the rights of the songs for very very cheap (probably some insider) and they wanted to make a profit from it and the best and cheapest course of action was making a DEI videogame. They contacted IGN and asked them how much to give them a positive review, pay them and they let the internet do what the internet does best.

Who really cares if they say the game is ass? The important thing is that it made money, and in that succeeded.

Did it? Does it? Sales numbers are next to impossible to know for certain, but you can paint a general picture with Steam sales:

Those stats are truly anemic for a game that received so much praise and press coverage.

For comparison, here are the chart numbers for a similar game that sold so badly it almost put its franchise and dev team on life support:

And here are the chart numbers for an Annapurna game by a small studio that actually sold well:

Again, take those with a grain of salt, and keep in mind that console sales might be much healthier than Steam ones (I doubt that's the case for a game like this, but again, no way to know for sure), and that Double Exposure probably had a considerably larger dev team. Mixtape's sales indicate it was the flavor of the month exclusively for a very loud part of the industry and was quickly forgotten by everyone the moment a new "controversy" took place. With the data we have at hand, this looks like a moderate flop, and I'd bet serious money that the game's sales (keep in mind the game is 20$) didn't pay for the 3-4 years of dev time, let alone the music rights even at a discounted price. I doubt the sales were so bad as to threaten the studios' existence, but at no point did it sell well.
The game's controversy made a lot of noise in both camps and probably helped it sell more than it otherwise would have, but it did not translate into healthy sales. Online kerfuffles very rarely boost sales meaningfully nowadays.

Even if the game only had a budget of 5 million, since Steam takes 30%, that's $14 per sale at full price, and would need 357k copies sold at full price to make up for that budget. Even at a budget of 3 million, it would still need 214k.

This is a game that still needed to pay 17 people for their internal studio before any other operations cost, voice actors, or licensing for the music. There's still an additional outsourced localization team, QA team, porting team, and then the Annapurna staff themselves. Just the 17 main people, assuming a development time of 2 years is already 1.7 million dollars just in paid salaries at $50k a year before any additional overhead like taxes or benefits paid.

Breaking even at best is "selling well"? Nevermind the additional cost of running a "playthrough" of it in theaters and likely not selling enough tickets to recoup that cost either.
