What are your guys experiences modding consoles and handhelds?

Whether it's to add a region switcher to play all those japanese Sega Saturn games, or add a DVD drive to a wii, or simply to play Doom, Quake and emulators on a PSP.

I just picked up a Playstation TV and modded that thing so much that it turned into a worthwhile purchase. I found out I could make it recognize a usb flash drive as its own internal memory, so now I don't have to spend a ton on those Vita memory cards. Then I removed the whitelist for it so it now has the ability to play every Vita game, and I put a PSP onto it so it can play every PSP game too, not just ones on PSN, and it can use the 2nd analog stick as camera controls for PSP games with wonky third person cameras. Oh and I put retroarch on it to turn it into the ultimate emulator box.

this thread is a trick, I will reply to it and then people will PM me asking me to help them mod their shit

well it won't work buster brown i'm onto your shenanigans

I've modded my PSP 1000 and one of my 2DS systems. Of the two I'd say the latter was a lot harder, I had to use a very precise guide to get it done right.

For the 1000 I added a single PS1 game that was never put on PSN(The fan translation of the PS1 remake of Tales of Phantasia), added all of the Final Fantasy Dissidia 012 DLC that was either never released stateside(Squall and Gilgamesh costumes) or had a small time frame of availability that I missed(Cloud and Tifa costumes), added two mods for Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions to make it run better(removed the screen stretching and made it not run like ass), and finally installed cheat-device like functions.

For the 2DS I mostly just gave it the ability to back up and reload both physical and digital game saves to an SD card for copying/editing.

Modding consoles gets more and more annoying nowadays.

A good example is depending on which model of PS3 you own, you literally can't mod it. And if the previous owner happened to update it in the last 7 years you also can't mod it. Sony was very clever about preventing modifications to it's firmware like preventing older models from downgrading to the version hackers were using.

It's getting harder and harder to actually buy models of PS3s you can actually mod that aren't sold for much more than they're actually worth. It's doubly annoying since this is the only way to play Metal Gear Online 2 since Konami patched it out of MGS4.

It's to the point where I'm predicting that in 10 years it's going to be extremely hard to even play a lot of digital only PS3 games once the servers go down and you can't share a lot of them with other people.

I successfully put a fliptop on my skinny ps2 even though the top was for a previous hardware revision. I found the extra tab and superglued it down.

Also I pried the tabs out of a SNES a few times and put piracy on my PSP.

I disabled the 10NES chip on my NES to get rid of the blinking grey screen of death. I also changed out the 72-pin cartridge connector.

Wasn't it possible to downgrade even if the PS3 was updated? (but only if the base firmware was 3.55 or lower, so there are models like the Super Slim where this isn't doable.) You did need a E3 Flasher and knowledge on how to solder the flasher with the console though.
(That and there is a way to inject backups/custom modded backups to OFW PS3s in case you didn't know.) Don't get me wrong, it's still BS how it's nigh impossible to hack newer models and the PS3 is a good example of your point.

I've modded the wii to play homebrew games, but that's a piece of piss.

I also modded the original Xbox via the IDE hotswap method and downloaded a tonne of games and emulators.

That's what I meant by how Sony was clever and intentionally designed later models to not be downgradeable. As far as I know the only way you can downgrade an already updated console is if you already have a second console to do it on.

i modded my ps2 to play copied discs, had to use an official sony memory card and 007: Agent Under Fire for it to work.

Ha! Same here (thought I was the only one who did that how-to) Also found dns addresses to play certain games online still. (Surprisingly the PS2 online community is still active. I played Starwars battlefront 2 about a month ago)

Modded my Wii to play everything.

Modded my Retron 5 to play everything.

PS1 is modded.

I hacked 4 Gamesticks and turned them into HDMI Android tablets.

Dreamcast plays burned discs.

Saturn plays imports.

I modded TONs of controllers to play on diff platforms. (PS1 controller on Xbox 360? Why not!)

Like my backlog, The list goes on.....

Modded my 3DS so I can pirate everything now (except for New Style Boutique 2 and that Story of Seasons sequel that hasn't been released in Europe yet because I'm a fan of the series and actually wanna physically own them) and have cool a e s t h e t i c themes and stuff. Nintendo have starting banning peeps with hax somehow but I have the file I need to get unbanned from an old 3DS if it comes down to that. I hope it doesn't since I love online for Animal Crossing.

I hacked my old aqua blue 3DS that I thought was broke but was actually in good condition and sold it to a guy on Facebook for £120, which was pretty good since CeX was only gonna give me £60 for it even though it was in real good condition since it had basically been in it's box for like 2 years+. I even polished it and everything.

I guess I'll pirate that Story of Seasons sequel if it never gets released in Europe which is a real possibility since the translators are having real difficulty getting the funds just to translate the DLC for the 'Muricans and will have to charge $3.99 a pop for it even though it was free in Japan. That doesn't bode well for getting the whole game translated again into French/German etc. for all the peeps in mainland Europe, which would be necessary for a PAL release.

I'm deffo gonna use Freeshop to get the kawaii Japan-only weeb fashion DLCs in my PAL copy of New Style Boutique 2 that I will eventually own.

crazy how 2017 wasn't even that long ago but it might as well be ancient history now when it comes to shit like this
