Modern Web Woes - I'm mad at the internet

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.
I miss when YT was more about creativity and funposting than censorship and monetization.
As much as I agree that youtube is too safe these days, it's not without reason and google can't be entirely blamed for its downfall.

Advertisers are very, verryy picky about where and what they advertise on because they don't want their brand being represented with something rancid or illegal.
When your platform relies on those advertisers to function, on a service and creator level, you're going to have to bend the knee at least somewhat lest you want to make fuck all and potentially scare them off from the platform entirely. There's a reason why alt-platforms that allow more freeform and uncensored content often struggle with funding and end up shutting down within a few years.
So look at this from googles perspective here; they have this platform that is ludicrously expensive to maintain, few want to pay for the premium features or paid subscriptions, a good chunk of their audience uses adblock or refuses to engage with ads, and their original content program flopped miserably with f-tier shlock. Leaving them with just one consistent revenue source, advertising, and it is repeatedly threatening to pack its bags and leave whenever JebShit1984 uploads his family guy boxset.

Keep in mind that content that does cater heavily towards advertisers is in the minority, if you dig deep enough then you can start to find the real gems made by people who just created a video because they wanted to.

So if the advertisers weren't so oversensitive - likely a symptom of Clown World - then YT would not be nearly as censored as it is now?

That's one reason and is why political videos are rarely monetised through advertising. But not everything is political, would an advertiser want to put their product before a video like this for example?
If I worked in advertising and discovered that my product was being placed next to an infamous autists rant, I'd probaby shred the contract and go scorched earth with that service because of the mere association with that person.

It'd be nice if a site could find a way to run without advertisers nor being a paysite somehow.

I really wish web designers would stop trying to make the desktop design look like the mobile app, as MY COMPUTER ISN'T A PHONE

this is gonna sound really autistic but fuck it, I really hate that in most major social media the icons now are in circle frames instead of square frames, why this bothers me so much is that, it is a complete headache trying to crop and fix a picture for your icon when in a circle frame. when it's square-shaped it's easy because pngs and jpgs and other image files are square-shaped.

I'm mad at the internet right now and at how they try to make it a "local" thing instead of "global". I miss the days when the default language of all websites was English and the default region was the USA.

The worst offender right now is Google. They have removed regional settings and they just use the local ones without any option to change them. I travel a lot and this is very frustrating. For example, I'm in Hong Kong and try to find a ticket in flights.google.com? All prices are listed in HKD and there is no option to change the currency. Am I in a country where they have some other official calendar (which even the locals don't use)? All dates now are listed using this calendar. Even though I don't know how to read it.

Second worse offender is Facebook. Most of the pages I follow have local versions of themselves. 3 years ago I visited Indonesia and since then some of the pages I follow still show their local Indinesian versions instead of their global one. Total bullshit.

I wish more sites put content in the center.

It slightly annoys me on normal monitors too, but not enough to start making userstyles (yet).

Woe is me, 1337x seems to be down.

Does anyone here know of a substitute? I want to sail the seas for some spooky horror movies that are recommended in the /horror/ general megathread.
