Modern Web Woes - I'm mad at the internet

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I turned caching off, and yet Firefox is still writing gigabytes of data a day to the drive.

WTF is it writing and is there any way to turn that crap off? (and I use uBlock Origin too).
The new update basically takes your data and sends it to god knows where, probably to advertisers or feds or anyone else willing to pay them, and they use it for their own purposes to train AI on the side. If that's what they're making public, god knows what's happening behind the scenes.
There is a reason why I made a big deal about not updating Firefox or it's forks to the update that introduced this backdoor, you know. I recommend downgrading and then making sure to change the setting in about:config I outlined a while back in order to turn extensions back on(disabled by default because the certificate is outdated).

about:config
I don't like how :c is turned into that ugly "Chris Chan" emoticon. Also, which new update?

Disabled all data collection in about:preferences, and still writing to drive. Even offline.

edit: found this:

How to Disable Telemetry and Data Collection in Firefox (on "The Windows Club", ad blocker advised)

tl;dr: search for "telemetry" and set a whole bunch of true/false preferences to false

Firefox is still writing data constantly -- even with those settings changed and when offline -- but it could also be because Firefox is also using this "virtual memory" BS.

I found this to be helpful too
As for what I meant, you should switch back to version 127 or lower of your Firefox based browser. The intrusive update I was talking about started with 128. Everything works fine for me on well below 127 btw, no "update your browser" or broken features yet.
To get around the extensions not working, set "xpinstall.signatures.required" to false and they should work.

It skipped my mind to ask previously. Is Firefox writing additional data in gigabytes per day or are these just constant writes to the hard drive without much bloating of the overall cache size? If it's the latter, it could be Firefox aggressively syncing its state to disk. See browser.cache.disk, browser.sessionstore.interval and https://github.com/graysky2/profile-sync-daemon

You can wrap the smiley code bits in PLAIN tags, like so: [PLAIN]now about:config is no longer sad[/PLAIN] No need to toggle BB code, enter this in any mode and it'll work.

Even with all my add on disabled, jewtube is totally wrecked on my firefox browser...

Use invidious, there should be a few instances running most of the time
Most well known instance:
If nothing else, you can use yewtube to browse youtube, then download videos using JDownloader or yt-dlp. Not elegant, but quite literally is anything better than using youtube directly.

libwebp is open-source and it would be noticed really fucking fast if it phoned home. Whoever wrote this has no idea what the fuck he is talking about. WebP is being pushed because of Google egos and because it shaves off a few % in costs, which is irrelevant for everyone except gigacorps like Google. Regards, an impassioned WebP hater.

Well all those amateur open source programmers must be shit then

I found the article you're posting screenshots of (Archive). It is effectively an advertisement for services provided by SAP's LeanIX. LeanIX offers thigns like "Software Bill of Materials", "Value Service Management" and other administrative bloat sold to companies promising to cure their shitty development practices.

Yes, there was a security vulnerability in libwebp back in 2023 (Archive). However, some corporate ad blog pointing out that you need to manage your software dependencies does not prove that webp is backdoored and calling home.

Now, if you want to make the argument that webp is a shit format and the complexity of its data structure is inherently prone to memory safety bugs that can become remote code execution, you might have something to say, but ads for corportate services are not proof. If you want to support such an argument, try showing a long history of such a category of bugs continuing to recur by linking to the actual bug reports themselves.

I hate it when the deletion of online content memory holes everything and removes the titles of what was once there.
I miss when reverse searching images on Google gave you the source really well.
I miss when 4chan WebMs had sounds.
I like you.
