Modern Web Woes - I'm mad at the internet

The modern web sucks.
We all know that already but I still think it deserves a thread to collect rants against it, examples of its horrors, or just plain shitposting.

It's fatter than the average lolcow, it's hard to archive, it becomes more and more centralized, and it tracks your every movement.
Even sites advocating for simple no-nonsense websites include Javascript that phones home to Google (see Google Analytics snippet in page source).

Displaying hypertext with images was something a common computer a quarter century ago could handle.
Yet nowadays, even simple articles make computers that are orders of magnitude faster sweat.

Sure, there are new luxuries that require more processing power like high quality vector fonts rendered in high resolution and important features like decent encryption. But overall I'd rather read an article with green-on-black Comic Sans interspersed with skull gifs than modern web sites that don't let you do even the simplest things like scrolling down without a ton of Javascript messing with it and making it worse.

And let's not forget the annoyances that have plagued the Internet, which are cookies/GDPR notices, desktop notification requests, and a metric fuckton of ads, plus scripts that block the site when it detects the end user is using an ad blocker, which resulted in the creation of tools that mitigate such blockers, which can be called "ad-blocker blocker blockers".

I miss the days when the internet wasn't corporate and monetized. They push these ads on us because they want us to spend money for those advertisers. Youtube was a better place when people made videos out of passion not for money. It breaks my heart to see people that I like suck advertiser dick. It's so fake.

i miss when the internet laughingstocks were freaks and autists like chris or phil but now all we have are political spergs and transexuals.

Political spergs rose from GamerGate and Trump, but especially Trump and I hate it. The worst part is that it won't be for another 4 years until they calm down about "nazi drumpf", most likely. (call me optimistic)

Oh god this. I just want all the horrible kids' toy channels and cgi baby nursery rhyme videos to go away they pop up in the recommended section every damn time.

I remember as a kid seeing the internet as a fun place for other geeks who were into manga and anime could hang out and be ourselves. Now if you be yourself on a fansite you have to be yourself in the "approved" way of being yourself or otherwise you're not welcome. It grinds my gears a lot.

See most subreddits.

Not all subs are horrible, just a lot of the ones that'll look through your post history to make sure you're the type they want posting.

You guys haven't seen the future of the web, computers and javascript. I have seen the future, and it is fucking retarded.

In the future, there will be no native applications. Everything you do on a computer will be 40 megabytes of javascript pretending to be a desktop application in drag. We're already at the point where developers are doing crazy bullshit like compiling C# to asm.js/webassembly and running it in the browser.

I work on one of these new "web applications" - it's essentially using javascript to pretend to be a native application in drag. People are doing shit like controlling pacemakers using node.js in javascript, using a language which was developed in two weeks by people who were trying to get people to punch the monkey and win twenty dollars.

I've seen people using angular / react spas somehow churn out 100+ mb worth of javascript that has to load in the browser. It's the most asinine thing in the goddamn wor;d.

Future? We already have that. Discord's "desktop" app is just a chromium version and a ton of JavaScript.
So is Atom and VS Code, text editors that some people are dumb enough to actually use.

Another thing that's wrong with the modern web is the exploitation of children. Youtube has been ignoring COPPA by collecting kids info so they can advertise pay to win shit that suck money out of their parents pocket's.

Let's not forget Elsagate and all the other gates too.

I mean, Atom and VS Code are good as IDE's, but they are absolutely trash for regular text editing. I only launch VS Code when I want to work on shit like HTML/CSS/JS/PHP, LaTeX or NSIS. For everything else I just use Notepad++.

The rise of patreon/twitch/youtube has had a negative effect on video games, as well as other mediums. Now you have "influencers" having their say in all these different industries catering to them. Youtube and all should've stayed for hobbyists in my opinion, nothing more.

It's weird looking back, as in the past people were still scoffing at the idea of making money off being a e-celeb, but now you've got bizarre situations like this:

Horror games, an already niche market, have been practically killed by streaming. So too walking simulators but no one that matters cares about them.

Sadly this is only going to get worse as more modern "developers" enter the workforce, because HTML/CSS/JS is easy and many of them are dumb. You won't see any middle managers vying for native applications (where reasonable) because they can shove a web-based prototype out the door and call it done in half the time, and they will be egged on by designers whose brains seem to operate on the CSS box model instead of neurons.

My favourite part of the "We need your consent to use cookies with this site. Accept/Deny?" is if you check your cookies for that site before answering they've already fucking added some, which is violating the rule that was the cause of all of those annoying popups in the first place.

I assumed most of that was because of cross-platform compatibility, so they only need people who know how to work with Electron and then they have MacOS/Linux/iOS/Android ports for x86/x64/ARM/ARM64, which makes sense to me.

If I could change one thing about the modern internet it would be the complete extirpation of every "desktop app" that is just an Electron wrapper and glorified Chrome tab. Yes I have 16gb of ram, that doesn't mean you're allowed to be careless with your programs ram consumption. That makes you a shitty person who doesn't care about optimization.
