Nah, he had some muscle despite his main costume sort of sucked. His alternate costume was pretty cool.

Boon's supposedly wanted to reboot MK a couple times before his team actually rebooted in MK9 - Deception's Shujinko was apparently meant to be a new protagonist moving forward than merely the main character of the game, Taven possibly could've been but Armageddon was definitely meant to wipe everyone out and start fresh, then they did MK9, and I suspect MKX and the Kombat Kids was to test the waters again with all the new characters in it and being set twenty-five years in the future.

I get the feeling he's tired of MK but it's all he's ever known, so he's stuck with it till he croaks. The MK9 timeline might've worked if they were a lot smarter about not killing half the cast and having a long-term lore plan till they inevitably story-reboot again, but who does that nowadays?

Been playing MK11 for a day or two and it's been a curious process.

I forgot about the existence of the AI battles. I don't know how to feel about it. It's like autoplay on a mobile game. Secondly, I wish the game would stop shilling the shitty mobile game to me.

Secondly, and this is mainly because I hardly touch Nightwolf in any MK game and my exposure to Nu-wolf is mainly through Aftermath but like....was he wallowing about "muh people" and "muh evil colonizers"?

Or am I just paranoid after Jax's fucking ending? Actually, a lot of the endings are kinda weird or mildly amusing to me. Fujin becomes Jesus, with an overt reference to the Last Supper and Shang Tsung as Judas in a metaphor that feels aptly overkill.

Mileena becomes a mom and apparently dates Tanya at the end, only for the devs to take that and run with it. Which is weird to me because I always saw it as Tanya manipulating Mileena given that...well, it's Tanya.

Jacqui erases herself from existence instead of just creating a new timeline. It's insane how Jacqui's entire identity revolves around her dad or her fucking Takeda. Also her tough gurl attitude got fucking grading after a while.

At least Cassie is a bubblegum-chewing, social media cruising, Starbucks slurping yuppie zoomer. I found her ending really sweet.

Rain is a mama's boy. I don't actually mind this one so much. I also like a whole of a lot better than his fucking ending in MK1 where he somehow gets duped into genocide by Havik and has a breakdown over it, asking Mileena to punish him when the Rain of old would be like "Whoops. Well, shit happens. I am a god so I can do whatever the fuck I want. Cry about it and give me the Edenian throne while you're at it."

But all this borderline Oscar bait (Sonya dying and the drama that comes from it) makes the dissonance between MK's story and its gameplay all the more wider. Narratively, it's hard to get invested when you can just go out of story mode and murder the mom you're mourning like it's just an average day. Or the intro banter is disproportionately relaxed and friendly to what's actually happening.

I'm not even mad at it. I just get a mild form of amusement from the dissonance.

On a flip note, I enjoy the Krypt too much. Not the looting but just exploring and traveling through the ruins of his island. I could see myself willing to buy an adventure game of that style.

I will say there were like a few improvements. Erron got upgraded substantially and Shang Tsung was delightfully smug. But Sonya was done fucking dirty. Goddamn, I can't fucking deal with Rhonda. And why is so much shit dedicated to the Blade-Cage drama anyway?

It's kinda annoying how intensely Ermac got squeezed into the Edenian hole. I think he worked best for me when he was an enigma or this plural consciousness, not the long-lost husband of Sindel or some shit. I can live with Jerrod being part of Ermac but I am over so much time dedicated to Jerrod at Ermac's expense.

Shit, this is possibly the first fighting game to feature micro-transactions & micro-aggressions.

I swear, we'll probably get to a point one day that when you perform a fatality (or even a brutality), you first need to input the correct sequence, & then we'll have to wait for your opponent to consent to receive it.

I cannot stress enough how poorly the deeply serious story and the emphasis on character relationships and drama and shit clash horribly against the hyperviolence. How am I gonna get invested in...say, Kitana and Kenshi having a tender conversation right before they are about to murder each other?

And it's not like the games didn't have established relationships before X. But it's so much jarring now.

Also who the fuck cares? Ermac has always been a dude because the personal genders of the thousands and thousands of souls were superfluous. That he is a soul construct is enough.

It's really lame too from a narrative stand point. It's like an episode of the Care Bears which goes onto the pile of horribly clashing things that is the Mortal Kombat meta. It also completely buttfucks Mileena as a character.

I am aware that this is a rewrite of her but it removes all edge from her and turns her into Lesbian Kitana with a bad hair cut.

The whole "Tarkatans are actually misunderstood precious little babies uwu" shit is practically ripped from Kitana becoming Kahn in MK11. But at least there, they just wanted to be taken seriously and were already extremely proud.
