MK 1 felt already like a very reactive entry, almost like they were trying to fix what MK11 did wrong and yet a lot of its decisions are either as bad if not worse than MK11's in my opinion.

MK11 is such a weird fucking existence to me and I still can't comprehend what they were thinking or why they'd go back on their decision for rebooting things with MK9. Like, I'm a big fan of the Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon trilogy, but I understand what a mess MK had become at that point. I don't like the decision to reboot things with 9, but I understand it. 10 as well, did a lot of things I don't like but can still personally respect because it takes balls to have a time skip like that and introduce all those new characters and actually give the story something that feels like permanence, like things can genuinely change and stay that way. So while I think some characters like Mileena got shafted I can still respect the decision to kill her like that in story.

And then 11 comes along and it's the biggest fucking trainwreck that just invalidates everything and turns the story into a far bigger clusterfuck than pre-reboot. Nothing matters anymore, there's no permanence, we're retconning the shit out of Shinnok and the Elder Gods, here's this brand new SUPER GOD who surpasses the Elder Gods, etc.

Yes, you can go higher than that and it is the only smart move left, so I expect them to either fuck it up or just not do it.

Once you open that Multiverse can of worms, if it expands to a high enough number of "alternate Earths" (which MK1 did immediately), you have to immediately close it or it makes the audience view everything that happens from then on as meaningless and irrelevant. DC figured this shit out in the 80s and did Crisis on Infinite Earths, where they destroyed the entire Multiverse and only 5 Earths remained, which were folded into 1 Earth. Since they're obsessed with "must go bigger!", their best bet is to write a story where there's a threat that's destroying all the different timelines and have it end with either 1 timeline left or just a handful of timelines. A few alternate timelines is alright because you can pull characters across from that while treating it as essentially another realm but you have to keep the number low.

Whatever its inadequacies, it's not losing money. Even in the 3D era dark ages the games sold well. It's not WB's style to even consider course correction until they're more than neck deep in shit and seconds from drowning, so I figure they're looking at M1K as a huge success compared to their bona fide money-losers like Suicide Squad. The decision-makers probably don't have any real clue about what they might be doing wrong, or even if they are. They'll put all their chips on players who preorder New Thing, buy every bit of DLC, then drop it after a year and preorder Newer Thing, and keep that up until such time as its no longer physically possible.

Funniest thing is, no mention of Switch at the end of the trailer. Guess they're cutting their losses.
