The analysis was based on an 3rd party assessment of the attractiveness of the couples (not the women’s perceived attractiveness to her husband). The premise of the research was actually that relationships between ugly men and beautiful women tend to work out better than the opposite (i.e. ugly women and attractive men). They cited other research showing this (incidentally, this fact goes against your entire premise). Also, men tend to value partner attractiveness in long term relationships more highly than women do.

What the research showed was that dieting motivation was moderated by partner attractiveness for ugly women but not for attractive women. This might be a strategy to increase their value to their partners.
