Most Toxic Online Game Communities - Hate the Players, eventually hate the game.

With Corona-Chan going to rain on the world's parade and many aren't able to get out and do stuff like they used to, gaming is certainly seen a great increase, especially with either online games or games with online features. These games can be quite fun, but these games attract some of the worst players from wannabe DJs, trolls, tryhards, griefers, people throwing around cheap racial insults, etc...

So in all of your opinions, what's the most toxic online game community you have ever had the misfortune of entering with?

In particular, Grand Theft Auto: Online.

People treat this like any other shitty First Person Shooter now and if you don't have anyone who kept patient with that shit (IE, most of my online friends), good luck not getting caught in the circle jerk of spawn killing or getting a bounty put on you as soon as you start a session. It's not fun if anyone wants to do something other than weak flex with auto aim.

Final Fantasy XIV is pretty bad.

Places like Reddit will claim that the game has one of the least toxic and most welcoming communities. But in reality, if you criticize the game in any way, you get shot down very hard. While you will rarely run into toxicity in the game itself due to Square Enix's draconian Terms of Service, the Styx runs deep on 3rd party services like Discord. Stalking, bullying, 3rd party discord mods running channels required to enjoy certain parts of the game, nothing is off the table.

Raiding communities for the game like The Balance Discord have attracted crazy trannies and are run by crazy trannies. They're allowed to stalk players, make false accusations, trash talk in the DMs. But you are not allowed to call them "retarded" because it's "ableism". I wish I was making this shit up, but it's something that was added to their rules. There's weird shit going on in their private discord channels where it seems to me like they groom teenagers into transgenderism, and enable each other's loser lifestyles.

The raiding community itself has a crazy fixation on mathematical efficiency to an autistic level. Players use third party tools and a third party website known as fflogs to create competitive percentile rankings on the internet. If you're not doing the most "optimal rotation", you're griefing. I've run raid groups for the past few raid tiers and in every single one of them, I had to deal with at least one player who sucks at doing the basics on their class, but will whine endlessly about how their parse is bad because the internet is bad/their gear isn't good enough/it's the strat that isn't uptime enough/they were playing with a blindfold.

I had to draft up a bunch of strategies this tier to "maximize uptime" so melee players wouldn't cry too much about it, but it overall makes progression slower and doesn't produce results. The players care too much about the destination (Having an inflated log on a third party leaderboard only discord autists care about) versus the journey (Actually getting better at the game and being more consistent at doing the content).

Twitch in general has the most autistic, toxic, echo chamber culture gaming currently has.
The only way to make it on the platform is appeal to children or flash your tits.
I never understood the appeal of Twitch. Every single time I dealt with a small streamer, they were a sycophant only interested in "making friends" who watch their stream religiously. And every single time I tried watching a bigger streamer, it's mired by a retarded chat and the streamer thanking someone for money every 3 minutes.

Call of Duty. Particularly around the 10s from MW2 - Black Ops 2. It's the good and bad kind of toxic, In voice chat, I would hear anything and everything. Swearing, arguing, "git gud," which would make for free entertainment. The bad kind of toxic: cheaters, modders and exploiters.

Overwatch. Particularly with the competitive mode. The meta and forced cooperation with throwers will annoy anybody.

World of Tanks and War Thunder are impressively bad. Not like "trash talking" toxic, like serious fucking assholes who engage in absolute shithead behavior toxic. MechWarrior Online community loves to say "WE'RE NOT TOXIC, WE'RE NOT LIKE WORLD OF TANKS!" and frankly that's a low bar to clear and they're full of assholes too, though frankly there are just tons of shit players that are easy to mistake for malicious shitheads. Common occurrences in MWO include but are not limited to teammates stripping your back armor and destroying half your weapons because they did not make sure their arm weapon firing lane was clear, blocking advance/egress, running in front of your mech when you have Rotary Autocannons going full tilt and then reporting you for friendly fire incidents, armchair generals being constantly salty about teammates failing to execute their brilliant plans, and abusing in-game comms to the point where most players have them turned off entirely because of shitheads who open a VOIP channel and blast an airhorn sound or loudly chew food, or repeatedly mash the command buttons to make an incredibly irritating noise.

Funny that you say that. XIV players pride themselves in "not being World of Warcraft" and "not being toxic like World of Warcraft".

At least in WoW I can tell a guy I'm kicking him because he's not doing decent dps/his job; if you join a group, you should pull your weight. In FFXIV I'd probably get warned by a GM for hurting someone's fee fees.

The best part about the MWO situation is that GMs are WAY harder on trash talkers (which are frankly a non-issue) than they are about shitheads being shitheads and blocking/FFing. My favorite incidents regarding absolutely unnecessary FF are when some dumb asshole decides to test his weapons/weapon groupings at spawn by firing a full alpha into your rear armor. "OOPS MY BAD HAHA" Yeah your stupid fucking stunt just obliterated my fucking Heavy Gauss Rifle you dumb asshole, check your fucking fire.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find one meaner than Rust or anything that spins off of that concept, especially since those sorts of games have relatively persistent worlds where resource gathering takes a lot of time and effort, so you're heavily-incentivized to go and beat the crap out of someone else instead of doing all the hard work yourself. After someone spends a week building and fortifying a base, and filling it up with all of the loot they've been collecting, they tend to get a bit upset when you blow the doors off and take it all for yourself.

HMMMMMMM. Have to think long and hard about this, in terms of actual quality players in a online game, gonna have to say L4D2. In terms on community, probably LoL. I've never played a game of League, but from the clips I've seen, gonna have to say league. I personally hate GTA 5 Online players and some toxic kids on TF2.

I haven’t played LoL but I’m under the impression that it is basically designed to breed toxicity. The game is set up so that a single teammate who’s having an “off” game can drag down everyone else, feed the other team, etc. Or one person can decide to sabotage and completely ruin four other people’s games after a fairly lengthy time commitment given how long those rounds are.

Otherwise, isn’t CS:GO the one with all the swatting? Seems a little toxic to me, bro.

I've played FPS games for decades - I started playing CS in 2004 and played in CAL and CEVO for years. I got tired of all the cheaters in CS:GO around 2015 or so. But I've spent thousands of hours playing CS online (even in my thirties I was like a DMG level player in solo queue) and thought I had experienced all toxicity.

Then I tried playing Valorant ranked, and the level of toxicity is fucking unbelievable.

In CS:GO, generally, people were toxic... but they'd be toxic to the other team. They would also be happy to be winning.

Literally every match in Valorant, win or lose, people on my team start arguing with each other. It doesn't matter if we're up by 9 rounds, people will just start shit and call each other bad. Do one little thing non-textbook and people start screaming over the mic about how you're "wasting utility." Entry frag as an Omen and a bunch of smug assholes will be like "Your Omen entries more than your Reyna." Drop the spike to get a pick and they start shrieking over the mic because someone put the bomb down.

It's actually so bad that I've started streaming my games in discord so my friends can watch just so they can get a front row seat for the toxicity. The game is great but it's making me fear for the future of this country.

I used to play a lot of the console version of WoT before I got into PC gaming, and the forum for that game is the biggest circle jerk I think I've ever seen, only topped by ReeeeEra.
If I had to name a personal lolcow it would be that forum's moderation team and their dicksucking orbiters.

I once reported a bug in their bug report section and had the main mod respond "That's hardly a bug".
If you're going to shit on people who are actively trying to help improve your game then why does this part of the forum even exist?
