There has been a major restructure at Mozilla. The update centered around platitudes of the usual shit when butchering your workforce i.e. streamlining, modernizing, and other nice sounding words for kicking out people in a pandemic and not wanting bad press for it.

Firefox updated their blog with the news about the restructure here. Here is the mention on twitter from the opsec team.

Update:
1) They also could be booting the servo team (the new engine firefox was developing)
2) Also the devtools team seems to be effected
3) They are keeping some security devs for the current engine (gecko)

I would say in the coming weeks to move to brave or a different browser. Interested in your responses.

Combing the thread:
Firefox alternatives Brave, Vivaldi, Ungoogled-Chromium

4chan /g reaction
Hacker news thread
reddit /r/firefox thread

unrelated but found in the process:
Brave being naughty and injecting affiliate links (only to cypto companies)

Speaking of Edge, why didn't Microsoft just update Explorer instead of creating a ~brand new~ browser?
Probably the same reason a lot of people jump ship to more recent and up-to-date software - old shit has baggage you might not want to deal with, no matter how small or insignificant. That and IE is notorious for being crap and rebranding doesn't hurt.

Sure, but why doesn't Microsoft just Old Yeller IE?

Her time is now! Get on board for the big win guys.

People still use Firefox? I thought they lost a chunk of userbase after their biggest update killed a fuck-ton of useful add-ons, prompting everyone to use Chromium-based stuff instead?
It comes pre-installed with most Linux distros + people like how it uses less ram and respects your privacy or whatever.
