Happened to come across this today:

Sounds intriguing, but I'm not expert.

Sounds like they are limiting browser customization to make it harder for browser fingerprinting. It sounds good from my initial glance.

Crossover of the year. I have heard great things about Mullvad as a VPN, the fact they offer to accept payment directly in cash by accepting letters with money and your keys on a piece of paper inside is so absurdly based it's insane. I wonder how their browser is gonna work out, I am gonna have to test drive it.

TL;DR for those who don't want to read.
  • Same feature set as Tor to prevent browser fingerprinting methods and a few other tracking techniques.
  • Comes preinstalled with uBlock Origin.
  • Does not use the Tor network (atleast) by default.
    • Instead relies on you having a Mullvad subscription (or a subscription with any other compatible VPN) and using that to hide your home network address.
Sounds alright, Mullvad has always been my choice of VPN because they're dirt cheap and don't have any major controversies surrounding them.

This has the same problem as base Firefox, the "resist fingerprinting" thing breaks half the websites on the interweb by changing your time zone to UTC. Did you know that if you're close enough to the South Pole, your time zone can dox your location to within a meter???

I'm not switching to any hardened browser for day-to-day activity until they fix this.

Josh is gonna be pissed.

On a real note, I'm really happy to see this. I've been wanting "Tor browser without Tor" for a long time. The Tor browser has a lot of great features and settings in it that are great for using as a daily driver.

the fact they offer to accept payment directly in cash by accepting letters with money
So extremely based to me. As a snail mail fan, this has come in handy many times.

Installing on my windows machine was easy, the install files are signed by The Tor Foundation which was cool. It also seems like the browser has a fixed resolution.
Installing on a debian based machine, and I am again reminded about why I hate computers
"Oh, I'm sorry you wanted to install a program? U wanted me to do a useful thing for you? Fuck you! I aint installing shit!"
It doesn't show up in the training wheels zone "application installer" for babies (me), and I have no idea how to find it and use a "sudo apt install" command sudo apt install [insert the thing] what is the thing? I don't know the name of thing. I downloaded the .tar.xz file, i've extracted the archive and that's all I can manage. 🎩! Who even names something sudo?! what after the supid pokeman sudowoodo, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! STALLLLMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: @magickittyz That explanation worked perfectly, thanks so much. - posted from my mullvad browser via tapatalk.

Go into the folder you extracted and open a terminal and run ./start-mullvad-browser.desktop --register-app. It will run and add itself to your application menu, then you can launch it from there.
You can also just take the .desktop file out and put it anywhere you want, desktop.
If you ever get a .deb file you want to install, you use sudo dpkg -i file or sudo apt-get install ./file to install it.

Seems somewhat promising, especially considering that I trust both parties involved. I think I'll wait to see how secure it is compared to something like Firefox with the Arkenfox User.js before I install it, though.

I'm currently using Mullvad. I'm currently using Tor.

When two things I (relatively) trust collaborate, I suddenly get suspicious. Still, probably going to be good. Or glow like hell, I dunno.

They have some autistic obsessions with capitalizations. Frankly, I think it is entirely reasonable to capitalize when talking about "the" Internet, because there are numerous other internets that aren't capitalized. "The" Internet is the one that's capitalized because it signifies the one that the vast majority of people mean when they say the word.

I'm still on Brave but this looks promising, I'll probably use it for browsing kiwifarms

Download, extract, click 'start-mullvad-browser.desktop', profit

It's a cool idea and I'll try it. Brave introduced some stuff I really enjoyed, so having more innovation in the browser is never bad.

surely there's a setting that allows you to use the time zone of your IP address or that of the proxy you are actively using.
