For as long as humanity has existed, it has competed against itself. Whether for food, resources, god, country, respect, wealth, power, status or just simple entertainment, we have always fought with one another. Competition is what makes the world go round. It’s what breeds success and progress. From sports to war, we have always been pitting ourselves against eachother. So it’s no surprise that with the creation of video games, the next reasonable step was to create an outlet for players to compete against one another. And with that they gave us a plethora of arenas to head-to-head in.

Because of this, I have posted a thread dedicated to the discussion of multiplayer maps in video games. Where we can freely discuss the good, the bad and the ugly and why we love/hate them so. Anything is fair game. Official, fan-made, cut-content, original layouts, remakes, de-makes and more. Post about it! And race tracks, fighting arenas/stages, party game levels and more count. Any place you play against your fellow man in the virtual arena counts.

To start, some of my favorite multiplayer maps are as follows…

Grid (Call of Duty: Black Ops)
Grid is one of my most memorable and favorite Call of Duty maps ever, as well as being in my favorite Call of Duty game of all time. It’s where I first went on an over 70:0 K/D ratio during a game of Domination. The map takes place at the Duga-1 Radar Installation in Pripyat, Ukraine. It’s also a map with a lot of snow. It had the perfect amount of interior and exterior so you never felt confided to one location. It had a good 3 way lane and two second floor sightlines that are parallel to one another that overlook look the middle lane or the map.

Stadium (Call of Duty: Black Ops)
Stadium is my second favorite Call of Duty map. It’s a pretty simple layout with an open center with a giant fountain in the middle, a hockey stadium you can enter on one side with a window and scaffolding, and alley ways/administrative buildings and a gift shop on the other end. It takes place at a hockey stadium in New York City. I also have a lot of fond memories on this map. I remember getting final killcams of me scoring goals by shooting the puck on the rink outside the map and turning around and killing someone.

Wizard (Halo: Combat Evolved)
I know it’s probably crazy putting a Halo CE map as my favorite over others, but I had a lot of fun on this map thanks to LAN parties with my friends. It’s small map that takes place in a circle. It has a tower in the middle, four platforms around it, and four teleporters between four platforms on the edge of the circle that take you to the opposite end of the map. It’s hectic, it’s small and it was a lot of fun.

Atlanta Supercross Track (MX Unleashed)
This is probably one of my favorite racetracks in a racing game. I’m a sucker for racing in front of a crowd in games, and I loved all the constant hard turns with bumps everywhere. Me and my cousin would always verse each other on split screen mostly on this track. Good times.

One multiplayer map that stands out to me would be Rat's Nest in Halo 3. The layout is, presumably, a warehouse stationed with several corridors in between a round track with Warthogs and Mongooses parked outside several spots. You could have skirmishes inside playing high ground or ground level while others could have vehicular combat outside.

One BTB battle had me on comms calling out enemy placements while manning the gunner and being driven around the literal map. Midway through, half the enemy team ambushed us with a roadblock and BRs, nearly careening us off the map. I can still remember my excitement accumulating gunner kills with the driver spotting angles for me.
