Mushoku Tensei thread - For General discussion of the series that started the isekai trend. God help us all.

A lot of people lost their shit at how perverted Rudeus was and this caused massive backlash on places like Twitter. People seemingly didn't get that Rudeus's perversion is a character flaw of his that he has to grow out of and overcome, which he does to some extent.
It's hard to recommend for that. Rudy isn't likeable for a long ass time. You are watching a shitty person who only cared about himself learn to care about others. It doesn't hide that. It would lose its impact.

That said, finished season 2 yesterday. Better than the manga adaption man. Eris ditched his ass, but Sylphie gives a shit. Big feels

Well, my sharp instincts can't always be right, I guess :story:
I forgot I said this, guess my instincts are just fine after all. It wasn't as bad as it sounds described, the only part that's really weird is the MC's love interests... Especially how serious they become; as a gag it wasn't a big deal, but it's admittedly a bit off-putting. It doesn't ruin an otherwise solid show.

She left to train to become worthy of him in her own eyes or something didn't she?

Glad you liked it man

Yes... but he doesn't know that. She is very blunt and not good with words

The knock-on effects of the staff from S1 leaving has become very apparent especially in the latest episode. Episode 22 was just as good, if not better than the episodes from S1 but the way they continue to gloss over or entirely skip content and change events diminishes parts of the story, making them bland.

So I hated anime until about a month ago. Solo Leveling became very popular and some of my buddies at work got me to watch it. It was a ton of fun and I subbed to Crunchyroll to see what I'd been missing. I'd watched some One Punch Man with my twin brother (he's been trying to get me into anime for about 15 years) and had fun with that, but overall never latched onto the medium.

After finishing Solo Leveling I was interested in seeing what else might be fun. My brother recommended Mushoku Tensei and I binged the whole thing.

Initially I was apprehensive as I got the hint of weird sex pest behavior that's all but endemic to anime, but the longer I watched I began to enjoy the overarching plot and the incredible animation. The character grew, and became less of an outright scumbag. His traumas and motivations were laid out and addressed.

It isn't without its flaws, but I enjoyed this show thoroughly. I enjoyed the emotional depths; the sadness, joy, and longing brought on with a coming of age story. I look forward to the next season.

I noticed the decrease in production quality between Season 1 and Season 2. To be fair, Season 1 had such beautiful animation, I don't know how they could have maintained that value. Even Season 2 has stood head and shoulders above some other anime I've seen so far.

I love the show. I've been looking for other shows with the same bittersweet emotional impact as it. So far I ended up at Frieren, which is also excellent. Would love any suggestions as a guy new to the medium.

Try Re:Zero, might be right up your alley.

Also don’t use crunchyroll, pirate like a real man.

I actually just started Re: Zero. I'm not opposed. I like crunchyroll because I can use it on my phone at work between calls.

So, is this series actually good? I read the web novel a long time ago and liked it. The issues some sensitive people have with it doesn't bother me, but how well written is Rudeus getting a harem? I ask this because i liked Grisaia no Kajitsu and think that the MC getting a harem diluted the series, even if it made sense

So when the hell is the next season?

If you like Frieren then these are similar enough:

Somali and the Forest Spirit
The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash (ignore the title)

General suggestions:

Shield Hero
Goblin Slayer

Dragon Ball (especially Dragon Ball Z)
Death Note
Attack on Titan
Konosuba
Steins;Gate
Yu Yu Hakusho
Mobile Fighter: G Gundam
Dandadan
Samurai Champloo
Big O
Atri: My Dear Moments
The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor
Great Teacher Onizuka
Street Fighter II V
Inuyasha
Ranma 1/2
Outlaw Star
Samurai 7

The first season is amazing, and it stays good. The harem thing is as well written as such a thing can be, it has actual weight to it and he isn't just collecting them like Pokemon, as is the norm.

What do you guys think is the coolest moment in the entire series?

I'm especially excited for season 3 because it has my favorite fight, iirc this should be the big season finale event. Water God Reida gatecrashing and holding everyone hostage with deprivation sword kingdom (the ultimate water technique), but not before decapitating a lot of unlucky bystanders in the wrong place at the wrong time who impulsively panicked before she gets the situation properly under her control. Orsted then enters after her monologue and steadily approaches her, deflecting every blow with the longsword of light performed with his bare hands and walks straight up to her and donuts her, refuses to elaborate, and immediately exits the scene.

I was hoping this would be an ova between seasons 2 and 3 and it might still be that, but a close second is Eris' introduction at the sword god dojo, where Gal Farion pits Nina against her with a secretly metal cored wooden sparring sword (meant to humble Eris because of her enormous ego and arrogance) while Eris only has a normal wood sparring sword. When their swords connect and Nina's metal core sword shatters Eris' wood sword, she instantly recovers by pivoting out of the way of it and punching Nina in the face, sending her flying, and proceeds to savagely beat her to a bloody pulp with her bare hands. She is accepted into the dojo, and immediately granted the rank of sword saint, despite having not yet learning the longsword of light, which is normally a huge prerequisite.
