Twitter users will face new limitations on the number of tweets they can view per day, according to a tweet from the company’s billionaire owner Elon Musk on Saturday.

“To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits,” Musk tweeted, before announcing that verified accounts would be limited to reading 6,000 posts per day, unverified accounts to 600 posts per day and new unverified accounts to 300 posts per day.

Before Musk unveiled Twitter’s new policy, users were met with a message reading “rate limit exceeded,” when trying to view content. Enough users were confused by the alert that “#TwitterDown” was trending in the U.S. on Saturday morning.

The announcement is the latest in a series of major changes for the social media company, including the appointment of a new CEO, Linda Yaccarino, who took over the role from Musk in June. Upon her appointment, Musk tweeted that Yaccarino would “focus primarily on business operations,” while he would stay focused on “product design & technology.”

Musk also made waves last week as he appeared to agree to a fight against Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Musk on Friday tweeted “some chance fight happens in Colosseum,” after reports that Italy’s minister of culture reached out to the two tech giants offering to coordinate the fight at the historical site.

Do we know what role the new CEO had in this new decree? Does Musk still make all the big decisions regarding policies and whatnot?

He makes all the important decision at 3pm high on adderall.

Also, I think the loans he took out to buy Twitter at an obscenely inflated price, requires twitter to be operationally profitable, or go bankrupt. He cant milk wallstreet investors to run the company at a loss.

Big data is the new fad, and assembling huge datasets to feed into machine learning is going to be very profitable moving forward. This is an attempt to keep people from just scraping Twitter data without paying, same as the Reddit API change. No amount of user discomfort or Reddit janny rebellion matters when execs realize they are sitting on a goldmine.

I understand the logic behind it, but I cannot see it being a good move.

When I first heard of this I thought it was a limit on the amount of posts you could make, which sounded a lot better. Limiting the amount of tweets you can view sounds like a way to decrease profit instead as it means you are forcing people to leave the platform when they want to interacts. And worse still is the numbers, I am absolutely sure complete addicts like Moviebob and Fatrick and a whole host of retards who live on twitter will hit that 6000 limit every day.

Looks like it's already been repealed lmao. I was getting an error before now I can view tweets just fine.

Musk's folley lasted literally four hours.

Someone get this man a fidget spinner to occupy his time and get him away from the idea room.
Just bumped to 800 it seems

This is the most retarded thing from Musk yet.
I got "rate limited" after 2 or 3 sessions. Took less than 2 hours where I was mostly on other sites and did other things not related to browsing etc.
I often read comments on other people's tweets to see reactions - it goes by very fast if you are used to that.
Now I can't look at anything that isn't on the main feed. Even seeing a thread someone has made about something is impossible.
