Twitter users will face new limitations on the number of tweets they can view per day, according to a tweet from the company’s billionaire owner Elon Musk on Saturday.

“To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits,” Musk tweeted, before announcing that verified accounts would be limited to reading 6,000 posts per day, unverified accounts to 600 posts per day and new unverified accounts to 300 posts per day.

Before Musk unveiled Twitter’s new policy, users were met with a message reading “rate limit exceeded,” when trying to view content. Enough users were confused by the alert that “#TwitterDown” was trending in the U.S. on Saturday morning.

The announcement is the latest in a series of major changes for the social media company, including the appointment of a new CEO, Linda Yaccarino, who took over the role from Musk in June. Upon her appointment, Musk tweeted that Yaccarino would “focus primarily on business operations,” while he would stay focused on “product design & technology.”

Musk also made waves last week as he appeared to agree to a fight against Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Musk on Friday tweeted “some chance fight happens in Colosseum,” after reports that Italy’s minister of culture reached out to the two tech giants offering to coordinate the fight at the historical site.

For a guy so many people think is smart Elon sure does make some retard level decisions.

Although a big part of me thinks his WEF masters told him to shut it down because the footage of the riots was making people realize multiculturalism only really works when the cultures involved are all white European and that shitskins and dunecoons are violent, subhuman mongs unfit to live in civilized society. .

You know, maybe that's the whole point. Get people off of social media and focusing on things that actually matter like their livelihood. He couldn't just close Twitter's doors after he bought the company, that would let the media and other neigh sayers win. That's my optimism bias view.

Seems like the feed works, which I never use, but trying to view a single account doesn't work

well, this definitely makes it impossible to use Twitter to follow live events (where you may have to scroll past 100 idiots retweeting something before one new piece of info) or archive lolcow behavior. I give this maybe 2 weeks before it changes.

edit: imagine how bad this will look when people trying to flee a shooting or natural disaster and looking for info about where to go that's safe see "rate limit exceeded." Great PR move. This is the problem with firing everyone who tells you "no."

Musk is proof positive that all those reddit socialist who want unemployment for all not just the rich are fucking idiots. Observe a man who doesn't need to work another productive hour in his life. Every one of his working hours is purely out of passion for what he does. Observe how absolute shit everything he does is. Tesla shit overprice non luxury luxury car. A Rocket fails on launch only slightly after a 1960s Soviet rocket of the same type did. Starlink unsustainable excuse to funnel money into more failed rocket designs. Fucking twitter basically an excuse to #ownthenarrative in the 2024 election which thank God he can't run in.

imagine if null made a policy change that limited the amount of threads you could read a day to like 10 and in order to read more threads, you'd have to subscribe to Kiwifarms+ to do so. it wouldnt be a good decision here, it wont be good for twitter in the long run. or the short run even.

There's no reason why you'd need to limit traffic on a social media platform.
The reason seems to be something relating to server issues, Elon didn't renew a contract with google and over night twitters Server capacity got gutted, this change seems to be a rushed attempt to limit server use until new servers can be acquired. The whole "Data Scraping" thing is, in my opinion, total bullshit to try and not expose his massive fuck up.

Big data is the new fad, and assembling huge datasets to feed into machine learning is going to be very profitable moving forward. This is an attempt to keep people from just scraping Twitter data without paying, same as the Reddit API change. No amount of user discomfort or Reddit janny rebellion matters when execs realize they are sitting on a goldmine.
The saddest part is that the people generating this data are the ones suffering for it. The fun part of machine learning at the start is any one with good programing knowledge and a beefy computer could do something fun with it. Now like everything corporation are trying to wall it off from everyone but themselves.

The public API is dying, because it got taken advantage of. Twitter's dealing with the same issues all the major social media sites are in terms of five-figure hosting costs for random nerds constantly polling the API for whatever nonsense bot they wrote up in their dorm room. Microsoft paid like $250k last year in terms of users scraping for Bungie user stats.
It isn't total bullshit, it's these tech companies winnowing away any excess cost to save some scrip and, spoiler warning, all the stuff they did to look cool and hip 15 years ago doesn't really matter when the rent's due.
They've always been soulless corpos, the last decade of easy interest and prosperity let them pretend otherwise.

This entire situation is fucking retarded, this fucks with too many people who rely on twitter to get real time news and info of what's happening around them to many artists who live in foreign shitholes where most jobs aren't possible or desirable and rely highly on twitter and it's reach to contact clients and make money to improve or move out of their situation( Power level but personally followed an artist that lived in a 3rd world country that used the money they made to move their family away from an abusive member)
and now this retard is about to fuck everything up for everyone

this is just him showing his power over these helpless addicts they will meltdown and throw a fit like babys without their milk then happily pay 10 bucks a month to get the milk

why have they not made twitter peer to peer or as someone on /g/ suggested have a public torrent of the content to loosen bandwidth cost who tf needs to pay google 1 billion dollars to serve text to a screen

i use kiwifarms happenings feed and 4chan for news get wrecked twitard

I'm not the smartest guy, but won't the chinks or someone just spin up a massive distributed army of bots that distribute the scraping over an endless number of accounts? I know there's probably ways of detecting that but there have to be counters to each of those methods and the only people that will suffer are the honest users who are following the TOS.

Supposedly around when Musk shut off non-account havers from seeing Twitter posts they ended up glitching something out, so that the site would keep trying to request posts. Which would suggest he ended up causing twitter to start ddosing itself.

Musk may have figured they could just limit use of the entire site while they try fixing whatever shit they broke.

It's definitely an attempt to force people into paying a monthly subscription, but I don't expect it to last. Twitter only survives as long as you have a freemium user base driving up the numbers, so the moment this decision impacts the bottom line is the moment it's quietly eliminated.
