Twitter users will face new limitations on the number of tweets they can view per day, according to a tweet from the company’s billionaire owner Elon Musk on Saturday.

“To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits,” Musk tweeted, before announcing that verified accounts would be limited to reading 6,000 posts per day, unverified accounts to 600 posts per day and new unverified accounts to 300 posts per day.

Before Musk unveiled Twitter’s new policy, users were met with a message reading “rate limit exceeded,” when trying to view content. Enough users were confused by the alert that “#TwitterDown” was trending in the U.S. on Saturday morning.

The announcement is the latest in a series of major changes for the social media company, including the appointment of a new CEO, Linda Yaccarino, who took over the role from Musk in June. Upon her appointment, Musk tweeted that Yaccarino would “focus primarily on business operations,” while he would stay focused on “product design & technology.”

Musk also made waves last week as he appeared to agree to a fight against Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Musk on Friday tweeted “some chance fight happens in Colosseum,” after reports that Italy’s minister of culture reached out to the two tech giants offering to coordinate the fight at the historical site.

Musk's latest changes to Twitter have broken Nitter, I'm guessing Archive Today and Wayback Machine will no longer archive Twitter.

Yeah, I was wondering if nitter was shut down entirely because of not being able to archive tweets from cows or just downloading funny image memes from meme and gimmick accounts.

Either way, I hope this gets fixed.

Fucking lol, lmao, rotfl, kek, and hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!
Apparently Twitter might be fucked because Elon is an even bigger idiot than we all thought.

And if this is why Twitter is down it means Musk is lying about the data scraping being the cause. Which means everyone on Twitter can now point at him and call him a lying faggot.
EDIT: Be even funnier if his tweet blaming data scraping got hit with a community note.
EDIT2:
Bit of an update, I'm finding lots of articles saying Twitter IS paying for Cloud again.

Almost all of them cite this article by (((Bloomberg))) news.

I think they increased the limit, but in either case that doesn't seem too bad. Maybe if you scroll too quickly, but then you can always choose to follow less accounts.

I don't totally buy into the whole "Twitter refused to pay Google for their cloud services this month" narrative, although I don't say that to give Elon any credit – he's still incredibly fucking retarded for implementing this change in the first place.

The fact that they're able to keep progressively bumping the limits up further makes it seem more like they're experimenting to find that sweet spot where "rate limiting" won't be intrusive to the average user but it will somehow curb bots. Which is retarded because it's clearly not working since the bots are still just as active as they've ever been even with all the roadblocks.

Elon, just limit the fucking API users like Marzgurl that literally block 90% of the site. I imagine this is an big 80/20 style problem. He's doing a 20/80 solution to it. Crazy. My main hope was that he'd buy Twitter and just shut it down, so whatever. Amusing.

ETA, I know this data scraping is a major IT issue now, but nobody should be able to mass block people that like tweets or reply to people. I have a feeling that's a big part of the system draining and a ton of troons and faggots do that.

Correct, they can't. The best alternative we have is to use ghostarchive, which has its own twitter accounts. Although you may have to retry an archive multiple times because it keeps getting rate-limited.

My guess is that data scraping was part of what Musk wanted to shut down, but trying to do the stuff about requiring an account broke the spaghetti code. Rather than do the sane normal thing of reverting the change to make the site fine again, Musk is stubbornly just requiring Twitter fix whatever is wrong so he can keep the change.

I got to view for maybe an hour, and now whenever I go to Twitter, I get load errors. I can see notifications if someone likes or replies, but can't interact, and even trying to look at another user's profile won't show the tweet history. I can't even see my own profile's tweet timeline.

This is what happens when you put an African in charge of your infrastructure.

Everytime I see Musk doing something I'm reminded that his extreme wealth is generational stemming from South African blood diamond mines because man is this guy not bright and someone who makes terrible business decisions.

Musk is one of the few people that actually makes me seriously consider the political left's point that money alone should not guarantee power or influence.

He is not smart, not even a little bit.
As far as I've ever seen, the most money he ever got from his family was a loan of $30K from his father back in the mid-90's. His extreme wealth is from selling companies to larger companies and then using that money to fund new companies. You could argue he got lucky or benefitted from the dot com boom, but that's about it.

The claim of him being a founder of Paypal is one of the biggest misnomers. He originally developed one of the first online transaction companies x.com (surprisingly not a porn site). Long story short, x.com gets bought by Paypal and Musk spends like a year or so as the CEO of Paypal before the board removes him for being bad at his job.

The source of his massive wealth was the stocks from being a part of Paypal. He had skill to be able to make something Paypal wanted, but he was also lucky it went that way.

This is a guy who is getting sued by a bunch of landlord for not paying rent. And if you ever wondered why Teslas always have fucked up panel lines, it's because their workers hammer adjust the panels by hand like a 1970's fiat.

Tesla notoriously refused to pay for the automation work at a couple of facilities in the state so they are effectively blacklisted by all the major automation firms. It's also why they had to paint the cars in the parking lot of their California factory for a couple of years.

I'm still amazed that Tesla Energy is still around after paying $2.5 billion for Solar City, which was in bankruptcy at the time. And their residential solar panels are fucking death traps.

My personal experience working as a contractor for various companies within Musk's portfolio, nothing would shock me.

I'm convinced Musk has some sort of sweetheart deal with the feds/banks. Where he's a part of the Too Big To Fail club; because just about everything he promises or claims is either very late or flat out lies. Yet somehow, his company portfolio stock continues to climb. It's not because he's good at his job, it's because someone is letting their arm lose circulation and turn blue instead of letting him fall off the cliff.

Oh it's the same nonsense where a company like Ford has to layoff engineers (since they are non union) to satisfy shareholders because the stock price is less than Uber. It's kind of hard to compete with a company that doesn't even need to make a profit and people will keep dropping insane amounts of investment capital into it every quarter.

edit: imagine how bad this will look when people trying to flee a shooting or natural disaster and looking for info about where to go that's safe see "rate limit exceeded." Great PR move. This is the problem with firing everyone who tells you "no."
Imagine using Twitter for guidance in an emergency. You deserve what you get at that point.

Possible explanation

Some people asked me to share what I just shared in a space about the rate limits. I don't work for Twitter but, I do architect IT cloud solutions as my day job.

It is temporary. Twitter's rate limiting is not what everyone is thinking it is. It is not to punish non-paying users.

"Data scraping" is a big deal. This is where automated systems load the website or app and pull your tweets/data. It's a huge security issue. Automated systems are pulling every tweet/word/user account information to store in an unknown database somewhere else.

This could be state actors like China, the US Government, Australia, or other bad political actors like PAC's that are trying to gain access to everyone's information to analyze and use for nefarious things. Manipulating what is said on the site can be done at scale with data scrapping.

It could also be used to figure out the identity of Anons or to punish people in their country for what they tweet. Looking at you #Australia and #Canada and #UnitedKingdom

The temporary measures of limiting tweets is to protect users just as much as it is to protect the entire Twitter network from going down. They are currently scrambling to get ahead of this and tune their network security to block it from happening again.

It's also important to note that twitter has 500,000+ servers. That's not free. In cloud data centers, the companies that use them have to pay for what is called "ingress and egress" of data going "in and out" of the servers. A data scrapping event that is large enough for them to start limiting means that it was a MASSIVE event that could be considered an attack on the site. It would also put massive load on their servers and cost them so much money it could threaten the site's financial ability to keep running. It could be on purpose to put twitter out of business from cost alone.

Many people are misunderstanding why
@elonmusk
wants people to pay for twitter or for the twitter API (a programming interface that can pull data for other sites and apps).

The reason he wants people to pay is because if China or porn companies want to create massive bot farms of fake accounts, it is currently free. These bad actors are highly skilled and operate like a business. They have professional staff that continuously change their tactics and Twitter engineers have to fight 24/7 to stay ahead of them. If they have to pay for every account or pay to use the API, it would cost them A LOT of money. This limits the amount of people who could create bots, put automated porn on here, and the hacking/scrapping/DDOS attacks on the site. It protects you.

It also guarantees twitter will continue to exist without bloating it with tons of ads. This is all a part of the plan to create a free-speech place we can enjoy without being controlled by outside actors or advertising companies. I know $8 is a lot to some people but, it is for many reasons. None of the reasons are to hurt or punish people.
