Twitter users will face new limitations on the number of tweets they can view per day, according to a tweet from the company’s billionaire owner Elon Musk on Saturday.

“To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits,” Musk tweeted, before announcing that verified accounts would be limited to reading 6,000 posts per day, unverified accounts to 600 posts per day and new unverified accounts to 300 posts per day.

Before Musk unveiled Twitter’s new policy, users were met with a message reading “rate limit exceeded,” when trying to view content. Enough users were confused by the alert that “#TwitterDown” was trending in the U.S. on Saturday morning.

The announcement is the latest in a series of major changes for the social media company, including the appointment of a new CEO, Linda Yaccarino, who took over the role from Musk in June. Upon her appointment, Musk tweeted that Yaccarino would “focus primarily on business operations,” while he would stay focused on “product design & technology.”

Musk also made waves last week as he appeared to agree to a fight against Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Musk on Friday tweeted “some chance fight happens in Colosseum,” after reports that Italy’s minister of culture reached out to the two tech giants offering to coordinate the fight at the historical site.

I'll just say that Elon, and I've said this about Twitter, bit off more than he can chew and now it's his fucking life. He is balls deep in this insane cyberwar social media crap. If only he had stuck to rockets instead of trying to make the world's biggest fansite since Truthsocial

And in the meantime, we Kiwis get to laugh at the dumpster fire.

Was hoping my counter would reset or whatever at midnight my time. I just got reinsted a month or two ago, so if this is the way Elon's gonna take shit, I'll just go back to living like I was banned.

I think he is not lying here. Ever tech company has AI projects to try to catch up to ChatGTP and they all want all their dataset to be as huge as possible and as current as possible. And then you have all the startups in the AI field and all the hobbyists running large language models at home or hobbyists training an "assistant".
I would not be surprised if the bandwidth this scraping would be well over 10 terabits per second, 24/7 and someone needs to pay for this bandwidth.
Elon decided he no longer wanted to subsidize the development of the next several thousand ChatGTP clones.
So if you are developing the next ChatGTP replacement, you can do so but pay Elon the bandwith costs.

I can also see Musk is getting annoying Gov's/NGO's are starting up massive data collection AI's to censor/research ops on people they don't like by trying to download every one tweets.

Sucks for Kiwifarms when we find some tranny with another "consent accident" twitter's account but better then alterative.

I think it's smart. Twitter addicts will pay for the endorphin rush, bots will be limited and sane people won't reach that cap.

Amy alternative platform failed, so might as well capitalize on being a monopoly.

The terminally online will finally have to touch grass. It's poetic.

Uh this is stupid. I follow less than fifty accounts some of them are addicted to Twitter and will retweet all sorts of stupid shit. Like scrolling through 300 posts would not take long. Now imagine an account who follows more or is using it to read on a news story/topic.
I'm taking a bet that this will be overturned by the 4th of July.
Sounds like a self-correcting problem as people unfollow accounts which do nothing but blast out re-tweets of anything and everything.

Honestly, making some of the Internet's minor interactions cost a tiny amount could have a very beneficial effect. Imagine if sending an email cost £0.0001. Businesses could afford it without having too much impact but spam would drop completely. And so would marketing emails. And for those few businesses that it would be a significant hit on their margins, those are also businesses where people could pay for the emails because the emails likely are the business service.

This rate limiting directly conflicts with other strategies Musk is trying on twitter like user subscriptions and direct-to-twitter video programs like Matt Walsh's show and Tucker. He is directly fucking over the latter groups of people by rate limiting large swathes of people who now won't be able to see those shows or the people they subscribed to. Seems nonsensical to me.

Everytime I see Musk doing something I'm reminded that his extreme wealth is generational stemming from South African blood diamond mines
Musk is no more than he is but it makes me raise an eyebrow to see people continue to repeat this story as if it were true. There's plenty to criticize without going into unsubstantiated territory. Plus my dad is cooler than both of your dads.

Musk is one of the few people that actually makes me seriously consider the political left's point that money alone should not guarantee power or influence.
Where are we at? 2016? Would you believe that's not a belief exclusive to the left?

Heck, if you don't think that in current year you aren't left or right but a political non-entity. Economics are, in all times, a tool of the existing regime. To have some kind of attachment to economic principles separate from how to use them to achieve political ends is harebrained and disqualifies you from wielding enough power to even protect those principles, let alone anything else.

I've said the same for years. If Youtube charged people $1 for an account to post comments, they'd have virtually zero spam and probably the same number of commenters. If they charged $20 to open a channel to post vids, most people who legit wanted to post videos would still do so, but you'd get a lot fewer fake channels that just repost other people's vids (not legit archive channels, but thieves and scammer channels) or the annoying fake AI channels I keep seeing pop up. It would make a small amount of income, but also cut costs since Youtube aren't having to host so much garbage.

I've never had an issue with Twitter moving to a subscription type model, or any social media site doing so. Seems like a much better alternative to flooding the place with ads, if nothing else.

If he really is just annoyed with companies trying to train AI's off of people's tweets, he could switch to a time-based viewing figure, where you can only see 300 tweets per hour or something like that.

Musk continues to run Twitter into the fucking ground while simultaneously making an ass of himself with his cringe tweets.
no kidding, the guy has not only made himself an ass clown but he also made himself look like an incompetent moron who can't manage a social media company (which is ironically funny considering he managed to run space X).

good. maybe this will force out the trannis to actually touch grass once in awhile. and if its kill twitter at the same time, even better!

you not even allowed to look at tweets without an account anymore, one of the few good things Musk did and now his walking back on it like an asshole.

Every website has rate limiting. You could put a limit that is completely transparent to a typical experience and cut back on a tremendous amount of spam and bots, because computers read and reply to tweets way faster than humans can.
