Buchel — whose weight ballooned to 842 pounds thanks to a lifelong food addiction — made quick progress at first, shedding 217 pounds at a Houston hospital in preparation for lymphedema removal surgery.

Once Buchel had his surgery, however, his previously unacknowledged addiction to painkillers kicked in, and he grew depressed and struggled to make progress as his body deteriorated. In a desperate bid at scoring more painkillers, he tore his surgery stitches.

Buchel was forced to leave his rehabilitation center for a long-term care facility after it became clear he was no longer trying to stay active, and shortly after, suffered a heart attack and died.

His final moment on screen ended on a hopeful note, as Buchel expressed interest in making progress for the sake of his fiancée.

But not long after, Lemanski appeared on screen to recount their final night together, saying that Buchel told her he didn't feel well and didn't think he'd make it through the night.

"He told me, 'I don't think I'll make it through the night. I love you and I always will,'" she said. "I lost my best friend and the person I was supposed to spend the rest of my life with."

He’s dead Jim! Yeah, show of hands, who’s surprised at this?

They could call the follow up "My Double-Wide Burial Plot".

Or maybe "My Urn is a Beer Keg".

Ahh...I feel kind of shitty making those jokes. But still. Don't be fat.
A double wide burial plot would cost a fortune.

Trying to cremate him would start a grease fire and burn down the facility.

Just pack him into a U-Haul truck and roll it into the river.

He looks like he was pulled straight out of an animated CGI movie

Every day we move closer to Judge Dredd:

Companies have literally come into existence just to put these fat fucks into the ground.

Look at this one.

I should get in on the fatty casket racket. I could probably corner the market by buying out pre-used refrigerator crates

At some point, you get too fat to get your own food, that's the natural fail-safe to KEEP you from ever getting that out-of-control fat, the only way to continue past that point and into these ludicrous 400, 500, 600 and beyond levels is to have someone BRING you more and not once say THE HELL YOU NEED MORE FOR?!

I've always wondered how they afford this massive amount of food as well. A lot of states bar you from receiving food stamps if you receive disability benefits (yes, really), and in many of those same places there's no way EBT would cover even half of what that much junk food would cost. And if perchance they were going to say, Sam's Club, to get skids of frozen chicken wings and pallets of mt dew, they'd have to get an enabler to do it for them. I'm reminded of that 1000lb woman's husband saying he was so scared for her life, but then casually handing her an entire cake as 'breakfast'.

I'm surprised it takes all this surgery and other shit to kill em, though. Seems like once someone hits over 400lbs they're high risk for drowning in their own neck waddles any time

I'm surprised that show went as long as it did without a fatality.

I'm even more surprised that Steven Assanti is still alive. At least this Robert Buchel guy tried to lose weight.

Steven is a fat, useless fuck. But people like him tend to hang on for some reason.

Like Steven this guy was addicted to painkillers.

That's pretty bad. Injuring yourself so you can beg for more painkillers. I think the most Steven did was have tantrums then doctor shop at different ERs once he was discharged.

I didn't see this one. I assume it's the one from this Wednesday. But I didn't get around to seeing it. Did anyone see it?

This was inevitable. The show deals with people weighing 600+ lbs. Robert Buchel was 842 lbs. It's not surprising. But it's unfortunate that he was trying to lose weight and ended up dying.

I don't think that the show will get the very deserved bad rap that Celebrity Rehab and Sober House did. Dr. Drew isn't directly responsible for the deaths of Jeff Conaway and Mike Starr. But rehab should not be televised. Especially when you are dealing with emotionally damaged people. That kind of show just plain should not exist.

I think that this show is different. But they need to be careful about when addiction is involved because it can cause a multitude of other complications. Then again, the food addiction is just as bad because it's literally killing them and unlike drugs you can't remove yourself entirely from the need to eat. So there's never any way to distance yourself from the thing you are addicted to.

I've seen the show a few times and I always ask the same question, how the fuck can any of them afford all the food they've been shoveling into their mouths for 10+ years? It's not like they are eating 8000 calories a day of lettuce, it's a shit ton of junk food. So where the hell does the money come from?

I think they are mostly on benefits. You can't work at that size. Even working from home on your computer would get exhausting when every breathe is a struggle. They send enabler relatives and friends to Walmart to raid the frozen junk food and snack cake section. There are a lot of cheap offerings there. But it does add up. Imagine spending hundreds on a cart full of food that could feed a family for over a week and in a few of days you've eaten it all and are screeching that someone go out and buy you more.

I'm very surprised that Lisa Fleming hasn't died yet. She did not get the surgery and was gaining more weight. She faked a suicide threat and kept having tantrums. I don't see a success story in her future.

If she does make it and returns to the show she may become the female version of Steven Assanti.

.

Obesity mostly causes chronic health conditions in later life, most of these people die younger than necessary but generally live quite awhile, considering. Heart attack data doesn't really look the way people assume it does.
