I made fun of speds long before I was here. They're not really that terrible as terrible people go, it's just that I find their delusions that they're on some higher plane than we are mildly amusing.

I wonder where that delusion comes from. The sense of superiority. Age? Groups like Websleuths and us are a little younger than they are.

They have this strange sense of moral superiority as if they're some form of catalogers and chroniclers of the dead. It really is bizarre.

I did see mention on there that their membership is primarily female. They have a bitchy mothers' club kind of vibe going on over there, for sure. I'm not sure whether it's age related or more a byproduct of them being such a small and insular community.

One thing which struck me as extremely curious is how ignorant many of them are. People who have been posting on that board for years have no idea about the processes of death, criminal investigations, or funeral practises. That's a little odd given that "the dead" are supposedly their hobby. They definitely don't like their ignorance being shown up by newcomers.

They make outrageous accusations based on nothing at all and have no conscience about doing so. That would be fine if they admitted that they were just a pack of internet gossips but they hold out the lie that they're something more noble. In one thread I read, they suggested to an angry family member that they could use MDS to talk about and memorialise their loved one - as though a place where vitriol is regularly directed towards people associated with the deceased is a natural place to do that.

I can see why their membership remains small. They have no purpose beyond fellating each other. There's no painstaking collation of articles. There's no meaningful research. There's no productive discussion. It's pretty much just people shit-posting gossip about the dead and those associated with them. I can see why it's especially jarring to the families of people whose deaths weren't newsworthy.
