Did your copy have the static cling of Mike and the Bots? I had mine on an old CRT for years.
I got my cling(s) from the VHSes and... maybe a fan club kit?
but yeah I know what you mean
, sold by Russian mobsters and all dubbed into a "kind of all-purpose Low Slavic
before this grows this is a lie
it is as funny lie, and online bootlegging of tapes was very common and easy
I got a copy of The Crawling Eye back in the day from msampo via Prodigy, shook his hand at the first conventiocon

there is very little evidence I've seen of Eastern Europe digging MST from what I've seen, there was Project Popcorn, a fan thing that was clearly a take on the MST idea, but not a commercial venture like the Spanish-language A Platicar A Su Casa

One time I was watching Jack Frost with some nerd buddies as part of Christmas after-party, and it was one of the most uncanny instances of the dream of learning about worldwide cultures with the monkey paw of THE INTERNET curling
this is probably like 2018, def before current Ukraine/Russia open war, probably pre-coof

dude from the crew is from Ukraine, we've nerded it up about "lol the highway next to chernobyl" and other stupid things, and he's reminiscing about watching Grandfather Frost as the New Year's Not Christmas movie traditionally in Eastern Bloc, and he sorta gets MST on an academic level but it doesn't really hit him as "funny" per se, and it's not just that they're picking on his childhood, it's just not really his jam other times too
other guy shows up
"oh lool Grandfather Frost, we watched this all the time, oh lol MST yeah you English speakers you like this stuff, but I dunno, it's just kinda ehh for me"
"yeah me too"
"yeah and I mean we'd always make fun of Grandfather Frost so it's not like we held it sacred"
"yeah same"
"sure is the same for us here in [ukraine/russia]"

they then spent the rest of the movie taking bitchy little swipes at each other

Speaking of MST3K piracy, my roommate and I are responsible for the complete MST3K collection torrent, the one with not only the series but a ton of extras like tv show appearances, that came out around 2005. We spent all of 2004 scouring every early torrent site and every P2P network to find them all and had them all on some shitty external HDD. My roommate uploaded it to I think mininova.org or one of the other suprnova copies that should up after they were shut down.

noice
I remember hosting the old DAP for... a half thousand ratio or so
my big contribution to Tape Circulation is that's probably a 2nd gen copy of my house's recording of I Accuse My Parents when my dad changes the volume during Truck Farmer
I never capped the tape but it was lent out to a very online-savvy buddy of mine for a year or few. He did a flip by the time I caught up with DAP so I never got a chance to confirm he lent out or dubbed copies of my tape.

unrelated I had to leave my cat locked up today and didn't have a synchtube gizmo ready, so I fell back on Amazon Prime on a roku tv for their MST, it's still running on autopilot so that's good to know I can get him MST noises on lesser devices

I use a Roku and there is a MST app. Otherwise MST is available on a lot of free apps like Roku Channel, Pluto, Tubi, etc.
oh yeah, free mst options are dead common, I was just a little surprised leaving a legit service on autopilot worked the way it's supposed to
usually I leave the cytube channel on for him, but that needs more of a full computer/phone browser than just a "smart" tv

Pluto has MST and Rifftrax channels, you can just leave those on all day.

Caught up with the most recent riff, The Death of Richie, one of those alarmist TV-movies-of-the-week from the 1970s, based on a book about an actual case, starring Robbie Benson (seen in MST3K's S4E03 "City Limits") and Ben Gazzara ("with the cool, confident demeanor you’d expect of a man who was able to bring the Fotomat and the JCPenney to town.") and other star power like Clint Howard as Richie's sidekick, known as Peanuts.

It’s like Reefer Madness meets The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, but with substantially more Peanuts. Join Mike, Kevin, and Bill for The Death of Richie!

It's been awhile since I posted here but I just watched the latest riff, a movie I was vaguely familiar with, The Banker. Burn-out detective Robert Forster and a local reporter tired of covering fluff pieces try to track down the mystery man killed ladies of the evening with his crossbow.

[During the opening credits, we see Jeff Conaway's name flash on the screen]
MURPHY: "Uh oh, we're getting Kenickie'd!"
[and his name is immediately followed by Leif Garrett's]
NELSON (impersonating Norm MacDoanld)" "Alllll the stars are here!"

Though I have no reason to believe this, I thank you and your roommate for your services rendered unto humanity. I believe I spent weeks of my life downloading that on three separate occasions (due to various external hard drive failures). For many years, that archive was the largest file folder of anything on my backups (until I ripped some horror porn site that had everything listed in one directory). Thankfully, we have good samaritans now remastering the entire series in 4K, using every trick in the book. It's a great time to be alive, ladies and gentlemen - And that's the theme of our program for tonight.

this is probably worth throwing into thinking way too hard about things
so Gypsy's got the derp voice in KTMA but she's still firing on all cylinders, therefor NOT handling the higher functions of the ship
which means that at some point between SK and S1 she was repurposed to handle life support etc
I suspect the Mads having to move down to Deep 13 had something to do with needing to take the SOL's main controls off the books, so to speak

Well, The Brainiac is gone from the RIfftrax library, did their rights to it lapse? Even though I haven't watched that Riff in a while, it was one of the early ones that got me on board with Rifftrax.

Thanks for this. I burned all of them to some DVDs and sold them for $50 a couple times
