Pod People is a great place to start, don't many people consider it to be the best episode? I wouldn't really agree that it's number 1 but it's definitely one of the best.

Another one of my favorites is Overdrawn At The Memory Bank because it's such a bizarre movie that it would be fascinating even without the riffing, so there's an added layer of entertainment to that episode.

One great episode people don't seem to talk about enough is Boggy Creek II.

As for as pirating goes, there's an uploader on ThePirateBay named 'bsg4you' that uploaded the entire series in season chunks. He used the ShoutFactory DVDs for the basis of most of them, all with consistent encoding and quality. There's a handful of episodes that there aren't DVD releases of (due to copyright troubles with the movies) that he had to use VHS and TV recordings of, though. He even uploaded the superior fan edit of the movie with all the added in cut bits and alternate riffs.

Yeah those are some good ones too. I think Overdrawn At The Memory Bank raw was on youtube last I saw.

I think Pod People works because it's very approachable and the host segments and the riffing don't rely much on knowing the show already. Like how Samson vs The Vampire Women is great for new viewers except for all the host segments being the ongoing thing about Frank leaving.

Pod People is very noteworthy for me because it was the first episode I saw on the internet, I watched it on Youtube in May of 2006 and it was the first episode of the TV series I had seen since 2002, between that period of time all I saw was the movie.

It was also the very first Joel episode I watched, it's total coincidence that I chose it because I didn't learn it was one of the more well known episodes until later.

Thank you.

One another note, what would be your pie in the sky dream version of a MST3K revival?

I'd love for simply the Sci Fi Channel era cast to return.
Well, Rifftrax is basically that, minus the puppets and host segments. I could only see an MST3K revival being worth it if the whole cast and crew got back together. There was something really special about that group that made it work so well for so long. I haven't seen any of the Netflix series because Felicia Day is the kiss of death for anything enjoyable, but from what I've heard it's just not the same. At this point, it's probably best to just let MST3K remain in the past.

Speaking of Rifftrax, their 2020 live show Kickstarter is up. Only two movies this year, Hobgoblins and Amityville: The Evil Escapes. I've been to a lot of these before and they're always a great time.

Thank you.

Yeah that's just Rifftrax

I was pretty happy with Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic doing their respective things (when CT was releasing videos and not just touring) and MST3k being left as a pleasant memory.

A good starter episode I would recommend is Prince of Space, along with Godzilla vs. Megalon. Both are tokusatsu films, with lots of unintentional goofiness. (MST3K did other tokusatsu films, like the Gamera series, but the ones I mentioned are the best of the bunch.)

I'd like to suggest Manos: the Hands of Fate, but that is an episode more for connoisseurs or fans of really odd, John Waters-like cinema with a fascinating backstory. (I'd argue the story of how M:tH0F got made was more interesting than the movie itself.)

Yeah while Manos is a good episode when you're into the show, no small part of the humor of that episode is from that characters' inability to cope with what a goddamn miserable pile of shit Manos is, which falls flat if you're not used to how they usually handle things

yeah as far as their toku goes Prince of Space and Godzilla vs Megalon are two of their stronger outings for newcomers

One of my favorite parts of the Manos episode is when Frank calls up to the SoL and apologizes for how bad the movie is, like they didn't know just what they were inflicting on Joel and the bots. I can't recall if the Mads ever apologized for any other movie, but that sticks out to me as a funny moment. It's great, but definitely not a newbie-friendly episode, particularly if you don't know anything about Manos going into it.

And if we're just continuing recommendations, I also really like Parts: The Clonus Horror. Dick Sargent and Peter Graves in the same movie means lots of Bewitched and Biography riffs throughout, and the movie itself is halfway-decent as you follow the kind-of-stupid (by design) clone protagonist on his mission to...bumble around a lot, I guess. Pretty fun overall.

I only watched the Manos episode once and that was over a decade ago, it's definitely not a newbie friendly episode but it's unique just for how awful Manos is even by MST3K standards.

Weirdly enough I think it's the only episode I own on DVD.

the movie itself is halfway-decent
It was good enough for Michael Bay to rip it off for The Island

Caught a couple of the Lash LaRue riffs. Fun stuff.
also in "Day of the Animals" they riff on that imagemacro of "this is fine" where everything is on fire

I don't know if we ever got MST3k here in Australia back in the day so Rifftrax was my first introduction to these guys when The Room became the flavour of the month online a few years back. Sucks they don't put out more stuff but I can at least go back and watch the MST3k stuff for the first time.

Manos: The Hands of Fate is unironically a better film than anything in Coleman Francis' library. They just hadn't encountered true horror yet when they did Manos.

I think Red Zone Cuba and The Beast of Yukka Flats manage to eek their way to 'bad enough to be entertaining' but Skydivers is just... bad, in the worst sort of bland and boring way possible.
