It's a common strategy for a defense attorney to drag a rape case out as long as possible in hopes the victim gives up or does something to make her testimony less valuable. Given the victim's age in this case, her housing instability and general mental issues, that's probably what's happening here.

The sad fact is many rape victims have other problems in their lives that can interfere with the eventual prosecution of their cases. Defense attornies know this, and it's their job to give their clients the best chance of winning at trial in the long run. That's assuming he doesn't take a plea deal right before trial, of course.

With a complete piece of shit like Nader, would an attorney really want to put him on the witness stand? No. A jury would hate him. If this was in the US, they'd almost certainly choose a judicial trial where the judge makes the decision rather than a jury trial. Choosing to not place him on the stand means no one is effectively countering Mae's statements with "he said/she said" testimony.

So the defense attorney wants to torpedo the case through procedures like dragging it out for years. If Mae dies, gets dementia or goes crazy, Nader can win the case if the prosecution doesn't have physical evidence he lied in sworn statements to the cops. If the prosecution had enough evidence to convict without Mae's testimony, we might have already seen a plea deal.

It’s also clearly obvious why he was happy to waive his right to a swift trial, which happened a few court appearances ago. I hate even contemplating what this prick might have done to Geraldine before she was rescued from his clutches.
