As for what his crime was. Nader revealed himself that he jumped ship after his best friend supposedly threw himself overboard on the ship they both worked on. Nader was accused by the captain, of the murder of his mate. Nader waited until the ship was in dock before he jumped ship. True or not, I have no clue. Nader tells a lot of tall stories, but this particular one did have a ring of truth about it knowing what we’ve seen of him, despite the gnawing doubt because he apparently was under lock and key if they really believed he had murdered one of the crew.

Somebody who does that all the time and keeps repeating all his (hero) stories would have told his refugee story, why he had to flee (the good thing he stands for that bad Egypt didn't like), how he fled in detail, what happened to him during that time until he made it to Canada ... and we never heard any of that. Just something about him working on some ship or something and how one day he just stayed in Canada when the ship was in Canada. And something about a dead friend, with no details at all.

So my guess is he didn't even have to flee, told Canada some story and they believed him for whatever reason. And gave him refugee status. And just doesn't repeat the lie he told them over and over again in his boring streams because if told too many times, who knows how many people would find holes in that story and contact immigration.

ETA: The only thing that I remember is that Chantal, who had no idea, as always, said something about some revolution ("I don't reallly know, guise") and that's the reason why he had to flee. BUT! He was in Canada many months before the Arab Spring, so that wasn't it, he wasn't even there anymore.

I don't know if the thugs with sticks were ever identified by the government of Mohamed Morsi (Egypt's only elected leader in over 5000 years of history), but even if he was identified, the current president, who is someone else, quickly formed a coup and the old guard has been back in power ever since.

Egypt is probably one of the top five worst places in the world, so it's no wonder he'd want to to not live there. But for political reasons? I just don't buy it.

Arab Spring in Egypt was in January 2011, he told the story many times how he came to Canada in 2010, I think he even mentioned the month, not too sure, but around March/April, I think. And since, for whatever reason, he likes to show all kinds of papers all the time thinking he can prove people wrong (when he is just giving himself and his lies away, like when he showed some document that said in Arabic that on the ships he wasn't even a cook but a mechanic, stuff like that), quite a long time ago he showed papers about paying his taxes and proudly showed how he came to Canada in 2010 and did work in 2010 because he had to pay taxes for 2010. So no, the Arab Spring wasn't it.

And yes, there is the story about a dead friend on the ship and that's why he had to "flee", meaning he just didn't get back on the ship in Canada, I don't remember what story he told, just that it was short and didn't make much sense. I also think it's possible that, well, he had something to do with the crime and that's what he was running from. And that Canada was dumb enough to give a criminal asylum believing whatever story he told them. Maybe he wasn't one, but the second I heard "dead friend" on a ship that he was working on as a mechanic who also had to fix the instapot in the kitchen from time to time and peel potatoes when the kitchen help had a day off, and then just not getting back on that ship but staying in Canada, I just thought something is weird here.

He probably told immigration some story about being part of the wrong political party in Egypt, maybe even that a brother was already killed by the other party (I have heard those stories and they are usually pretty similar - and never true), they believed him, gave him asylum and now he can stab and abuse Canadian women and be in hobosexual relationships with them like the bum that he is and consume copious amounts of drugs and also by his own (and Chantal's) admission deal drugs after possibly getting away with murder.
