There seems to be a correlation between video games and lolcows. (No shit, I know). But look at the most famous lolcows and how they're connected to video games.
DSP - Fat, annoying jackass who plays video games badly.
LTG - Muscular, annoying jackass who plays video games badly.
Sonicfox - Gay, annoying jackass who plays video games well until he faces an Asian.
Etc, you get the picture. I feel like since video games are where people find comfort, myself included, it's also where people become their truest selves. Which is sad that it brought out this monstrosity from a skinny speed runner named after the Green haired fuck from Odd Parents.

I was working on an FGC thread with two others but laziness and personal stuff got in the way of that. But when we were researching, there is a metric absolute shit ton of lolcow worthy shit going on in that area. If I ever get the energy going, I'll make that thread as games like Smash, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter have some of the most exceptional people on the planet.
Yup Smash especially. I personally knew a few Smash people. The whole smelly bad hygiene basement dweller stereotype is 100% accurate for these guys. Friend told me he had the guy stay at his house for a week, walking around, doing shit, etc... guy didn't shower the whole time. Got to the point where he told him to shower before sleeping in his bed and things got weird. These guys were like living memes (still are I think), it was insane. I read the stories about people like this, but never knew it could go that far.

I know this is derailing the thread but I want to know what happened. What do you mean, things got weird?

I always found Cosmo to be quite the whiney, annoying type, but never really enough so to give me a good belly laugh like some of our other special internet people. Just never really found a person sulking on camera all day for like 8 people that entertaining.

That being said, some of the old speedrun shit he did was pretty damn good. He has some serious skills. If he really puts his nose to the grindstone to try and kick some ass, he could have some success.

All this talk of Cosmo really makes me miss stream.me (RIP)

No, not really. The most 'entertaining' runs are usually 100% runs nowaday. zfg definitely prefers hundo at least, because it's where all the cool tricks are (as opposed to playing a song 63 times, or picking up rocks in weird ways.)

Very fast any% runs like these are really more 'technical accomplishments', they're the kind of things that TASers like to do because they're short and involve a lot of technical knowledge and expertise. If you want to see a human play the game in real time, any% is not really the best or funnest category for that.

It's the life cycle of speedrunning.
1. Everyone tries to beat the game as fast as possible more or less normally.
2. Glitches gets discovered, it becomes a mixture of technique and glitches
3. Game gets optimized. Everything comes down to perfect execution. New saves are only hypothetical or TAS-proven
4. Stagnation until new save gets discovered. Then we are back to step three.

Some games like OOT has a lot of leeway in them, making it possible to find new glitches. Other games, like Goldeneye, is so optimized that people are counting frames. The new GTA:SA save is worth mentioning. It broke the game so hard that many players don't find it fun anymore. Looking down in Goldeneye had the same effect. Sure, they recovered, but in the end all games will end up with heat death.

Speedrunning is more or less the perfect "human"-game. It combines what we evolved into as a species, problem-solving and repetition. Maybe that is why so many autistic individuals get so into it. You don't need a lot of social understanding (like in any normal sport were you at least have to work with trainers to become world champ), you can sit in your basement and just read and practice all day.

I always enjoyed those weird oot LOTADs zfg would host. The 100% in 3 pauses one is really enjoyable thanks in no small part to the commentary.

I think that speedrunning has been has been hurt really badly by other challenges and modes that have been created - primarily games that have had "randomizers" added. It's much more of a skill based exercise when you can't prepare as much for what's ahead of you and it comes across as more entertaining for the players and viewers.

Also, "Narcissa" has fallen to 15th place.

Nothing stopping him from playing those.

I don't mind the randomizers that much. They seem like a gimmick, but they're entertaining to watch as long as the person playing them isn't obnoxious. They don't require as much planning as they do memorization, to be honest, but it lets content creators and speedrunners play a game in a more relaxed way while still being able to show off speedrunning tricks that might be necessary to get an inaccessible item.

Kind of off topic, though, so I'll stop here.

Goddamn, Cosmos got some big youtubers in his audience

Maybe I'm just used to seeing them but I thought button input displays were required for an OoT run to count. Also compared to some of the other recent runners on the list his form is sloppy, I'm positive someone will knock this down by minutes now that entering the Deku Tree is not required.
