Yeah they did it in part because he's the black guy. But he's got the 23 on his car and Jordan is God in that town, so I can't totally blame them. If Kurt had the 23 I bet they'd have him there instead.

Mikoyan's stupid idea of the day: So, a series started by 'shine runners going to Chicago. You really wanna cheese this out for promo? The week prior have a series of basically rally Special Stages (or just Super Specials on tracks) going from, say, Nashville to Chicago in the week up to it. Call it the "Capone Express", or something dumb like that.

It wouldn't be possible for any number of reasons (though none would be insurmountable), but you can't say it wouldn't be the funnest part of this whole fucking thing.

Edit: The cup iracing series is coming on and they're fellating this whole thing. But it's 'their track' so...

I'm... half serious. He's there because he's black, sure, and the golden boy of Phelps, but he's also there because he's Jordan's Boy - this in itself implies black too but whatever. The fact this whole thing is a shitshow and that they pick the guy to be the face of everything doesn't get in the way of the fact that it's a solid marketing move to play on local sympathies. The counterargument that traditional fans or people who have a brain don't like it doesn't apply because this is taking place in Chicago, they have neither of those things.

Don't worry about it, we'll all laugh when he wrecks out into one of those 90 degree corners.

Edit to restate since I think I did actually overstate it: If Bubba weren't a factor or possibly even if Bubba were in Cup but not driving for 23XI, they'd take a 23XI driver because of the local connection.

It's hilarious that he was chosen to promote a street circuit when he's notably fucking terrible at road courses. He's gotten outrun by the RWR shitboxes before.

Ironically, this desperate fellow-kids pandering might be the biggest reason the fanbase is not getting any younger. Zoomers value authenticity and with something like that they can smell a rat a mile away.

Reddit is having a victory wank over the Nascar Pride t-shirt being the top seller in the merchandise store and are gloating about the fanbase being wokified. Only further down do they admit that the reason it sold so well was that some kids on TikTok who do not and never will care about cars were clowning on it for being pandering and a whole lot of people bought it as a joke.

I’ll be honest I’m actually a fan of the road courses as they allow for a broader use of racing skills. On the circle tracks it just feels like the biggest skill is consistency over a longer duration of time.

I don’t think Chicago of all places is the right place to do it. Is it going to be possible for a car to flip the barrier and smash into a building?

They'll have the barriers right, it'll be fine. That's also mostly a park.

I'm a huge road course fan. There's a big difference between a natural terrain road course and a street course like Chicago, which Cup hasn't done before. Street courses tend to be narrow with super tight corners, which makes passing a bitch especially as huge as Cup cars are.
 
Since the Gen-7 is racing great on intermediates and terribly on short tracks, maybe Nascar wants to take a step back from their plans to hack up Fontana? Give it a couple more years on the big oval and see how it does?

In the replies to that first one, I see USA's got another docudrama about Cup in the works. ...and one of the top comments is 'this is so boring compared to DTS it shows cars and not people and emotions'. I'm sure Phelps is working on the next phase, full on WWE with storylines. Can't wait for his "Mr. Phelps" persona winning races.

I have mixed feelings about Fontana. I have some good memories of CART going there but also very bad ones. The decision probably is all about Socal land values and nothing about racin'. It does make me think more that the antitrust aspects of NASCAR owning ISC probably need to be examined at some point but that would turn out gay so maybe not.

So first day of Indy today. Was kind of okay! Except got dicked at by security for no real reason. One of my amusements was finding out that Hendrick has two merch trailers, one for Chase Elliott and one for everyone else.

Phelps and O'Donnell's dream is every track being Talladega where there's a big one every 5 laps. Things like the storied "Streets of Chicago" are basically the car equivalent of gimmick matches, now that I think about it.

The only drivers who have their own merch trailers these days are Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch. I remember when I was a kid and every driver, even Robby Gordon's shitbox team, had their own trailers. Now there are some whole teams that don't have their own trailers. Pain.

One of my struggles with being into NASCAR is how many normie fans are really there for The Big One. People always say 'it's wrestling on wheels' but there's a non zero risk of that actually happening at some point.

Mmm, Robby Gordon. I wonder if his energy drink teleports you into the Rage Dimension that he drew his personality from.
