  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
On one hand, you could pick out insane shit said by users on this site and make us look crazy.
On the other hand, we are self-aware and will also rip on our own spergs and loonies.

I will say as a potential community watch, it definitely has potential. Especially some of the hot SA-tier NS General takes on politics.
NS also attracts a lot of semi-elitist narcissists who think they are personally the hottest thing ever with the best ideas for an infallible state.

Honestly the RP side of the forums is the less cancerous, because you can really just ignore the shitty RPs and stick to in-group roleplays.
Plus its a total insider meme farm.
It is. Plenty of fun to be had if you can find a good group that you gel well with. That said, the RP side of NS does have its own issues - mainly in the P2TM subforum, which is my main haunt.

None of it is particularly interesting though. The most cowish thing I can think of would be a period in the past when RP Mentors (not jannies, but basically "high-tier" players who get a special name colour that indicates that they can help others) conspired to get a popular new player perma-banned because he made an organic community-driven news project that was more popular than their inactive "official mentor" discord server. Second most cowish would be two former senior mentors who ditched the site quietly, one after going crazy and lecturing players OOC about political wrongthink, and the other after driving their whole game into the ground because they were making ART instead of just, you know, writing silly fictional stories with other anons.

Lesser funny shit I've experienced includes:
> A schizo spic anarchist who openly bragged about vandalizing peoples college dorms for voting Republican, and leaving knives in their rooms as some sort of threat. Real edgy boy. I think they either left the US or got deported.
>A schizo tranny anarchist who openly bragged about shoplifting to totally own the Capitalists, who was also an unironic AGP with a bimbo fetish.
>Being lectured by an autistic troon furry about why liking old-timey pirate stories makes you a crypto-fascist.

RP coziness and vidya/media banter is really the best way to interact with the site. There are people who I loathe when it comes to politics that I can have a good chat with when it comes to Star Trek or Dark Souls or what have you. So long as I can do my gay little text games with my silly OC's and vent about Elden Ring with some lads, then I'm happy. Also a pretty good milsperg community as I understand, between unironic autists, engineeringchads, and military vets.

I got banned from this site for putting an MS paint swastika as my flag when I was a bored edgelord in computer class playing this to pass time, probably had some stupid name as well. I guess by that point (around 2015) the game was well past its prime so it's funny they were still able to check on every obscure new nation like mine.

whats that one site similar to this one but based around the US government that was shilled hard on /pol/ in 2016? the one that would constantly restart elections once the right steamrolled the left.

Wait, what?

Wait, what?

Basically, some new guy joined the site and started his own little newspaper for one specific subforum, which got really popular. He then got banned without warning after making an off-site Discord server for fans to chat in, and some people think it was a setup.

Suppose some backstory is needed, for anyone interested. The whole idea of mentors - respected posters who would help other players when it came to writing critique, worldbuilding, etc., came up sometime around 2014 or 2015, if I remember correctly. Think like the NS version of Guides of The Lotus, if you're a Warframe fan. It seemed like a good idea at first, slapping a distinctive nametag on them and saying "these are the folks to go to for help if you're new at NS stuff.", And for the most part, there are some alright people in that group. Others, not so much. Problem is, the community around the P2TM subforum (non-NS related writing and roleplay) began to die out over the years after that, especially as more people moved to Discord for NS-related stuff. There used to be things like annual award threads, community events, the occasional crossovers with groups, but as things got more "official", that sort of stuff began to disappear.

Any way, a new poster going by the name Vanquaria pops in. It was Vanq-something, any way. Charismatic dude, gossipy, but fun to chat with. He starts his own thread - a sort of newspaper/tabloid that covers happenings and drama within that subforum. It winds up getting popular really quickly, because it's just a novel idea that just about anyone can contribute to. There are Vanq's own updates, nice graphics and editing, user-submitted ads and articles, and even interview pieces. Nice little gig.

Someone suggests making a Discord server for folks to chat on, share spicy takes that wouldn't be allowed on-site any more. It happens, and the server blows the fuck up. It's a madhouse - people bringing up old drama with other users, arguing about it, and then laughing afterwards and making up. Other people sharing NS horror stories, there's an art channel for people to share their shit, worldbuilding talk, and even live interviews and panels with certain users. It's just overall a really fun time, and one that's happening as a spur-of-the-moment thing between users who probably wouldn't chat together otherwise. Thing is, it's not an "official" server, and that doesn't sit well with some users, especially in places like the NS Mentor Program server, which is largely inactive. A few of them start to call out Vanq as a dramawhore and troll. Vanq and other server admins formally invite them to the new server, where they will be given unique roles and allowed to chat with everyone and see that it's just a server for good fun for the community. Every one refuses, with the exception of two guys - one of which doesn't join any way because he's just not interested, which is fine. The other does join and, being a cool dude, has no problem shitposting with the other users there.

A few days later, Vanq is suddenly banned out of the blue. He's Delete-On-Sight, basically meaning that any new profile that's even suspected of being him is subject to deletion. People are understandably pissed and ask why he got banned, but all they get is dead air and a "deal with it" from Mods. People keep pushing for a reason for the guy's ban, and eventually they're told that it was because he was spamming ads...in an advertisement thread. And then it changed to him trolling other users. And then off-site violations. The news thread he had been running was locked, too. Everybody just sort of scattered and started moving even more activity off-site as a result. Still no clear reason why he was given the boot, I think, but some people seemed to think that at least a couple of the mentor posters there who were cozy with mods wanted to find any dirt they could to justify reporting him over.

Not that every person in that group is a bad egg. All of this happened around 2019 or 2020 if I remember correctly any way, so it's all old drama. It was still a really weird incident for something that wasn't directly related to politics on the site, especially for a usually-quiet subsection of the playerbase. Apologies if it's not a very interesting story. All things considered, it's hardly the craziest thing to happen on the site. Not like the cousin-fucker who ran for political office, or the guy who bragged about fucking underage Thai hookers for two years before finally getting banned.

Ah, I remember NS. The forums have always been so slanted as to be RetardEra like in their obsession with who is the biggest online leftist. I'm honestly surprised it's still around as you wouldn't expect zoomers to go so far down the rabbit hole of useless, censored online debate that is Nation States. I stopped playing it when any sort of right of Mao view got you banned because everyone over there is literally unable to comprehend nuance, or that just because your imaginary game nation might be a "Psychotic Dictatorship", it doesn't make the person behind it one.

I got a region there, what sets nationstates apart is that you can auto-recruit (send invitations to newly founded nations)

I fucked around with this for a while, including making a joke nation for another forum as if the idiots on it were running a country. (That they later discovered and tried to figure out who made it but all the guesses were way too wrong.) But one time I tried to figure out how to do something with your nation and went on the forums assuming that outside of the role play stuff it was just a nice place with helpful tips to make your nation more entertaining. I was quickly disabused of this notion.

I remember there being some big panic and big deal at one point about someone who had stolen control of a region from somebody else and it fucked up the country rankings or something. I really never figured out how any of that shit worked.

Was Macabees involved in this shit?

Wow, haven't thought about this in years.
Ex GF and I both played from before the book was published until 2005 or so.

At least two recent waves of new users came from YouTubers making videos on the site that blew up. I think a few nations on the site are also designated as classroom accounts, since it has/had some presence in schools...somewhere. I can't say how most of my acquaintances found the site aside from just randomly stumbling across it or being recommended the site by someone who was already using it.

There's a good minority of right-wing users and more conservative Lefties on the site, but it's not as unified as it once was. Mods cracked down on "general discussion" type threads in the general subforum (minus the Trans threads) just to spite the Right Wing thread posters there, and that was after attempting to infiltrate off-site chats of said users to try and find dirt on them on a few occasions. A few regular lefty posters have also tried to dox Right-leaning posters as well at one point.

For my part, I'd say I lean pretty hard left. Thing is, I'm also more socially conservative, so I'm basically lumped in with the Right-Wing crowd by default. I'm fine with that, since they're better at shitposting any way.

Huh, so that's how it works. I have to admit, I haven't bothered with regions or the actual gameside aspect of the site in a very long time. I never thought about how certain regions throw out their recruitment telegrams so fast.

Was Macabees involved in this shit?
I don't think so? A cursory search doesn't show me their name, any way. Could've been in the server if they're involved in P2TM in any way, but I can't say for sure.

I just know that all of the Vanq guy's posts were removed on top of his nation being deleted - as in, his whole history on the site wiped without any explanation, and multiple mods stepped in to shut down discussion about it afterward.

I still play this game every now and then. The civil and political rights stats are useless, you need to go all in on economy and make sure a police state is established as soon as possible
