I can understand why some Muslim women want to wear the hijab. They've been brought up to believe that it's the proper thing for a woman to do. It's the same reason why women in America feel compelled to hold onto their virginity until marriage; they're simply told that it's what a woman should do, even though there's no logical reason not to, with condoms and birth control readily available.

I'm not saying that it's wrong for Muslim women to wear these things. The issue, as I see it, is that they've never even considered taking it off. If they knew that it was okay to take off the hijab, if they could be assured with 100% accuracy that they would not be judged negatively or physically harmed at all for removing it, would they still choose to wear it? Like if Allah literally came down from the clouds and said "Hey ladies, I appreciate you wearing the hijab, but you can take it off any time if you feel like it" how many would keep it on?

You're partly right. Think of the abaya as one half culture, one half decency. To moderate Muslims, wearing an abaya is the same as wearing a blue t-shirt: it is just something that they wear because it's present in their culture. Not all those who wear it do so out of a sense of "covering up."

For those who do, the best analogue would be comparing it to a bra or underwear. Hair is considered quite erotic for Middle eastern Arabs, and so wearing an abaya is as natural to them as wearing a bra is to a western woman. When people march up to them and tell them how they are enslaved by a cultural relic that wants to squash their womanhood, they look at them as if you ran into a dirty hippie burning a bra at a rally and yelling about "tools or oppression."

Only thing I'd like to point out is that boobs can be hella sensitive. There are days when I'm just hanging out at home and still wear a bra because it's just more comfortable. Same goes for sports bras. Going on a jog without a good sports bra sounds like torture to me. So there are other reasons to wear bras besides modesty.

But other than that, I see what you're saying.

Absolutely, I agree. There is a very practical element to the bra; good luck going for a run if you're busty. Though the away isn't quite so utilitarian in this day and age, it's a descendent of desert garb that would have helped you survive in the heat and dry air. A neat example is the red loops that fit on the top of an Arab man's headdress: now they're just for show, but in the not too distant past they were used to bind the knees of his camel when he dismounted to keep it from wandering away.

I'm going to assume you're female. Otherwise I'm going to say "Hi Chris!".

I don't understand people saying that his art is good from a technical standpoint. His art just really looks terrible to me. Like, the characters are stiff and soulless, and everything freaking shines, from every goddamn angle regardless of the direction of the light source???

Cotton clothing doesn't reflect light in the same way as something that's plastic omfg.

It literally is a pain to look at his drawings.

Oh yeah and he's a shitty person with shitty views too I guess.

That's all well and good, but when your immediate lolcow comparison is GENTLEMEN straws...

You're not the only one. He obviously learned his techniques from the worst of the How to Draw Manga books. The characters are generic and bland, and goddammit I hate when people make everything not just shiny but super shiny. I don't think it particularly looks "pretty" when everything in a picture is shiny. It just looks like a world of metals and plastic.

Not all Muslim women wear hijabs either. It depends on the place and culture. There are a lot in Turkey and Egypt who see themselves as Muslim but don't wear it. Turkey used to have a lot of rules about the hijab too, like female university students not being allowed to wear it. This changed recently, but it used to be the case.

And yeah, the guy's art looks fine from a technical standpoint, but it looks sort of generic.

Whenever a forum member opens a thread along the lines of "is there anything Chris is better at than you?" the most common answer (and mine's as well) is usually drawing. I haven't done a comprehensive survey on the matter, but I'm guessing that most people (both on the CWCki forums and IRL) have shitty drawing skills, leading to Nayzak's work being percieved as pretty good.

Anwyway, I am somehwat amused by this drawing of his:

I like how voluptuous he drew the tits of the women on the far right.

She developed the shape of a whore because she didn't cover enough of her hair.

Im really digging the nun and the Hindu girl!

Also the three short pieces in Memories.

Hell, even that one episode of Fullmetal Alchemist puts me in tears. You know the one. I mean, if you've seen the show, there are a few episodes that tend to turn fans into sobbing two year olds. But this one in particular.

I actually don't know very much about anime. Like, I'm not the kind of person who seeks it out. I just see it as another form of animation. But you know the saying, shit floats to the top.

Barefoot Gen and Berserk are pretty brutal too. They're like, "These characters you've grown to like and sympathise with? Well fuck you, they're dead."
