Need advice about Gamecube-on-PC related stuff (controllers mostly)

Episode 4 just kinda exists. It has a story but it's just kinda there, unlike the ridiculous stuff that's present in the first three episodes.
Yeah from what I've read, Episode IV is basically "Dark Falz tries one last time to win." Comments I saw in the PS thread said the content was very lazy.

And yeah I had heard about Ep III and IV being in reverse order. I actually bought Ep III on ebay since it sounds like it might be fun.

What I AM willing to do, is play a game that plays similar to PSO (either of them but I think I prefer PSO1), but which isn't an actual Phantasy Star game. This way I don't risk burning myself out or running into muscle memory issues.

Problem is I can't think of many games like that. In fact the only other one I can think of is Diablo... one of my friends won't touch that though as it offends his religious sensibilities.

If you've got recommendations though, for games that play similar to PSO, throw them at me!
I don't know many that are like PSO either. But since you list Diablo, I can name a few Diablo-likes.

Obvious suggestion, Torchlight 2. It's Diablo but looks better and runs on a potato. Fun multiplayer. For me the dungeon grind is ...well, a grind, but if loot games are your thing, it does that. Torchlight 3 supposedly sucked, and Torchlight 1 is single player only.

Remnant From The Ashes 1 or 2. More Dark Souls than PSO, and requires a beefy PC, but good stuff if your into mixing shooting and melee.

Heroes of Ruin on 3DS. Only played the demo, and it would require some shenanigans to get it online, but might be what you want.

Spiral Knights. No idea if this is even still running, but it was a simple MMO with a dungeon crawl focus and a cute art style. Likely the closest to PSO in theme and tone.

And finally, maybe something like Dynasty Warriors if you like a more hack and slash game instead of a RPG. No idea which are good though. They've done sci-fi versions over the years too.

Keep in mind I'm looking for games to play with a group of friends. Not just by myself. Preferably something on steam since I know all my friends have PCs.

All the games I listed are co-op.

Torchlight 2 is multiplayer, Torchlight 1 is not. Torchlight 3 is supposedly bad.
Remnants from the Ashes are also co-op, and with none of the dumb juggling invites and invasion nonsense of Dark Souls.
Heroes of Ruin was multiplayer iirc, but was local?
Spiral Knights is a free to play MMO.

Only possible exception is Dynasty Warriors since I've not played them in years. They used to be split screen. My point with that recommendation is less Dynasty Warriors directly, but more that the hack and slash genre might be worth looking into, depending on what you want.

These games are all fairly family friendly. The possible exception of Remnants but you're mostly killing really angry trees if I remember right.
