Neocities and the Yesterweb - The Second Coming of Tumblr. Led by a massive group of extremist hypocrites that go by neopronouns and full of webrings devoted to "transing the internet".

Have you ever wanted to relive the good ol' days of the internet?
The days back when, if you were online, most of what you saw consisted of personal websites filled with flashing gifs and really obnoxious pop-up ads? The days of Geocities, Angelfire, and Tripod?

Well, too bad.

Welcome to Neocities- the site where old web design meets new-age insanity.
Prepare to have your pleasant memories of yesteryear tarnished beyond repair.

Section 1: What the fuck am I looking at?
Neocities is, to quote its landing page, a site-hosting service dedicated to "bringing back the lost individual creativity of the web". To that end, it's a service that allows you to sign up and host a free website on its servers.
Each free account is entitled to 1GB worth of space and one domain name, and to earn any more of each you need to upgrade to a "Supporter" by paying 5 dollars a month for 50GB of space. There's nothing inherently wrong with that- and Neocities itself isn't really the issue, more so the people who use it.

If, by your question, you were referring to that portrait up there, it's of your average Neocities user. A non-binary, trans, aromantic cuddling enthusiast with an entire page dedicated to explaining how much he doesn't want to have sex and how much of a girl he is. (Here's some archive links for those pages in case he ever DFE's.)
By the way, when I say average, I mean average. This guy is one of the most normal people I could find on that entire site (of those who've made functioning webpages)- especially its largest group.

Buckle your fuckle. This thread is going to make you wish tumblr had never died.

Section 2: Webrings and the Wonderful People who Join Them
As one may expect, Neocities attracts the kind of people looking to bring back the past- but only in the most literal and superficial of ways. Eye-bleeding visuals, endless buttons and gifs, and shrine pages are abundant here, but you won't be seeing too many dedicated forums or attempts at community. These sites are all about me, me, me.
Or, well, the webmasters who run them.

Beyond the sites, though, there are three main forms of communication on Neocities.

The first is the Profile system on Neocities itself, where you can comment on or follow other sites' pages. Same goes for any comment section or guestbook willingly implemented by a webmaster on their page via Disqus or some other service. These are usually harmless, especially since Neocities is a MASSIVE echo chamber, but still worth mentioning.

The second type is through an external site like the very few forums that do exist (the most notable ones are the Melonland and Yesterweb forums) or "alternative" social media- which many of these webmasters swear "isn't like those other social medias where corporations spy on you", because they're made by extremist start-ups who thought Twitter was too tame! These sites are almost always one of the following: Cohost, Spacehey, Mastodon, Buzzly.art, or any of the mainstream sites (most frequently tumblr, instagram, or twitter). We'll discuss this one later.

The third and final type is through webrings. That's right- one of the only interactive elements of the old web that's resurfaced in this pit has been the practice of creating webrings around specific things and using them to heavily promote other sites.

Sounds great, doesn't it? Yeah, it does! I wonder what subjects these webrings revolve around?
1685647793714.png
Ah.
Fascinating.
And here's the part where I clarify what I meant by "new-age insanity".

Neocities is absolutely infested by tumblrites.
And not just your average Twitter user either- oh, no. As you might've guessed from my social media comment earlier, these are the people that Twitter was too tame for. These are the kinds of utter lunatics who show up in trashy documentaries and would've been absolutely blasted by people like Leafy or Ricegum 7 years ago for being absolute freaks. These are the kinds of people this site was made for.

And now, a minute sampling of what neocities webrings have to offer:
Obviously this is cherrypicking a little bit- there are some other webrings, mostly without purpose but some about innocuous things like gardening or making art. But the vast majority with any kind of stated purpose fall under the umbrella of "queerness"... or, predictably, "90's" or "retro" sites.

And what do we know goes hand-in-hand with gardening, "queerness", and programming? Why, radical left-wing discourse, of course!

Section 3: Owning the Libs by Doing Exactly what They're Doing while Quoting Marx and Crossdressing
It's no secret that tumblr was an extremely left-leaning platform. Extremist, even. And yet, it had small sects of it that were even more extreme than what you typically think of. Absolute fucking nutters who genuinely think that China in the 1970s was a better society than 2020s America because an old, 12-hour film made by two very rich communists was apparently more accurately representative of life in the country than the endless amounts of documentation detailing how shitty a place it was to live in.

This is the type of people who inhabit this website.

This type of thought is extremely commonplace across all of Neocities, but especially in the now-defunct Yesterweb Forums that most active webmasters dwelled in.
The forums were a wonderful place where great thinkers came to discuss how all it takes to stop AI from stealing their jobs is to unionize, kids should go to school less (or not at all), and how much better the internet would be if it was funded by communists instead of capitalists. I'm speaking in past tense because, to my great relief, the place was shut down on May 1st and has since been deleted*.

*has not actually been deleted. The deadline for deletion has come and gone and the forum remains accessible in read-only form. UPDATE 8/9/2023: The forum is still up in read-only mode. I doubt it's being deleted any time soon.

I've archived almost all of the forums here (main forum), here ("The Gazebo"), here ("Computer Lab"), and here ("The Garden"). Most threads are very short (less than 10 surpass two pages), but there's a whole host of them dedicated to discussing how great the world would be if capitalism didn't exist and sharing contact info that I'll have linked at the bottom of this OP (since there's a lot of threads and I don't want to clog this paragraph up). Almost every single member also wrote a manifesto to prove their loyalty, all of which you can read here.

"But why are there so many threads about contact info," you may be asking, "if this is supposed to be like the old internet? All of these people have abandoned social media- shouldn't there only be one or two threads for aggregating their sites and emails?"
Au contraire, dear reader! You must remember- these people only want to return to the old web in the most shallow and surface-level ways possible! Actually getting offline is hardly what they're after!

And so, almost all of these people still have social media- they just have social media on even more niche and even more radical networks. Instead of Twitters, they have Mastodons. Instead of tumblrs, they have Spaceheys. There aren't too many of these platforms between all of them, either- maybe 5 sites in total that they all share, and most are made by small-time tech start-ups.
Sound familiar?

Nah, it shouldn't. These people rescinded Social Media, after all. There's no way they'd just lie about it like that.

Section 4: That Other Section about Individual People that I Couldn't Make a Good Segue Into
Now then, that's nice and all, but this is Kiwifarms. This is a place where retarded people go to laugh at even-more retarded people who sperg out at you for calling them a faggot instead of just calling you a faggot back. Where are the cows? Where are the Interesting Individuals that would make this network of sites so interesting to browse in the first place?

Man, you shouldn't've asked.

A (very) small list of some Interesting Individuals inhabiting the Neonet:
That's just a few of the wonderful people you'll meet while browsing Neocities.
Seriously, this is the tip of the tip of the iceberg. One thing this site does very well is recreate that rabbit-hole feeling of falling down site after site after site, watching the absolute insanity escalate from a trans teenager or two into a full-on demisexual genderqueer whose pronouns include onomatopoeia and furbies in them. Shit's ridiculous, and ridiculously entertaining if you don't think about it too hard.

Looks like a fun thread. I had been following the yesterweb/neocities implosion down on lolcow, but it just wasn't the same. A couple of posters were going so far as to actively discourage discussing drama, which of course slowed the whole thing down and killed the fun.

I like the platform, but the community of the site itself is an ugly case study in why having a good moderation team is desirable after a certain point. So far as anyone can tell, all of Neocities is just the founder and maybe his lady friend propping up the servers and not much else.

The community has been left to organize on its own, with the most terminally online floating to the top like a load of extra gassy turds. The incredible capacity to self isolate and ferment further in your chosen retardation doesn't help.

Watching attention addicts suffer from the lack of asspats before crawling back to Tumblr/Twitter/Discord is kinda funny, though.

Hard agree.

I actually wasn't there for most of the implosion: I was there for the aftermath (and did a lot of archiving), as well as the whole situation in late 2022 before everything started shutting down, but once I realized who Neocities belonged to I kind of tuned out and tried to ignore it until now. Have you got a good idea of what happened?

Is that the official retcon now? Tumblr used to be very free speechy at one point with hundreds of nazi blogs, there were literal aryan brotherhood nazi bikers tattooed head to toe in swastikas posting Hitler quotes from their trailer park methlabs with no jannies in sight to spoil the fun. In retrospect, early tumblr was the golden age of social media

I mean, it was known for being very left-leaning for a while. I don't think it was talked about as much when it was so free-speechy, was it?
Admittedly, I can't even remember a time in which tumblr was "free-speechy" at all, so that might just be a bit too much of my own experience talking...

Aw this sucks. I've seen the Neocities/Yesterweb community before and, well, I've even come close to joining in. Always needed to brush up my CSS skills, lol. Sucks to see that every single fucking person in that community is a gay retard. Literally a gay fucking retard.

I'm sure there's a few good people, but no doubt they're few and far between, compared to the non-binaries, troons, fags et al in this whole thing. It sucks because this seemed like a good idea. Retro Internet revival? Hell yeah! But no, they found a way to even fuck that up. I guess we are headed towards the end of the Internet. Feels.

It's mostly secondhand, but according to lolcow and melonland guys, the retroweb was made by Sadness, but this insane South American Commie called madness was the one actually running the show. Madness and everyone she swept up in her influence didn't actually want a retroweb, they wanted a Marxist movement dedicated to transforming the web into their own dumbass vision.

Unfortunately, 90% of their "movement" were children and autists. Artists and linux fags, AKA the kind of people most likely to be actually useful to projects like this, were actively driven out for being too bourgeoisie. A lack of cohesion, poor vision, and spreading themselves too thin between the discord, website, forum, zine, radio, gemini capsule, and who knows what else eventually burned out any who remained, and the project got folded.

Here's a link to the lolcow thread I'm getting this from: link (Archive)

Here's the Melonland discussion: link (Archive page 1, page 2, page 3)

Melon mentions she was kicked out of the yesterweb herself, which is a little wild, because out of all the big figures on Neocities, she seems to be among the sanest. Just a fruity Irish artist messing around with JS.

My personal theory is that her focus on having fun while building websites ruined their self-serious little RP, but that's just a guess.

Depending on what you mean Yesterweb is already shut down. They've put it into read only and it's been that way since May 1st. Also their mega document crying about having to shut the project down is incredibly autistic and I am sure there is milk within the several statements from users they decided to collect for whatever reason.

Archive.is can't save it properly for whatever reason so I had ghostarchive do it. Brilliant timeless web 1.0 work, guys. https://ghostarchive.org/archive/5NeRi

So they wanted to be a internet dictator

this is long overdue i love old web design but have noticed the massive amounts of troons using it i found it from one of distrotubes videos comments then i watched a video by this leftist chick where she praises it for how gay it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTSEr0cRJY8 also i checked out spacehey and every one of the forum posts is about how insert person is a pedo and other drama im sure theres some milk on there aswell

Neocities has existed for around ten years and there are well over half a million sites hosted there. If you browse at random through the sites they are almost all just standalone websites that people have made, no relation to the pronoun people, communism or any of this other shit.

But if you browse neocities and sort sites by newest sites or most active sites and look through the results randomly, it is now jam packed with tranny shit, gayness, furry garbage, mental illness, leftism, etc. It is like in the last couple years the place was infested and taken over by these type of people. It wasn't always like this.

One thing that I have noticed is that hardcore leftist content seems allowed. But whenever I've seen a site that obviously leans right, eventually I go back and often cannot find it again. Like the site is being downranked or delisted from the search results. Could just be my imagination and I'm just paranoid but I've been browsing neocities for years and it seems like sites that don't follow the approved California Tech Lefty narrative eventually disappear.

these posts are very informative, thank you! I'll try and find some way to put them in the OP. If I can't find a neat segue I might just link at the bottom of the page if you're okay with that (maybe collect links that elaborate more and give them their own little spoiler or something).
And yeah, Spacehey is also a total shithole. There's also huge overlap, which is why I was considering adding it to the OP along with the other Social Networks that "totally aren't just Twitter or Tumblr again you guys". Would highlight their hypocrisy and warn about those sites being rotten too. Then again, that could crowd the topic when Neocities is already incredibly rife with content...

Depending on what you mean Yesterweb is already shut down. They've put it into read only and it's been that way since May 1st. Yep, I'm aware. I made a little note in the OP that the forum was actually supposed to be deleted yesterday (despite the fact that it's still alive and well as I write this). That document is also, in fact, autistic... but unfortunately I didn't have the mental fortitude to read through all of it for highlights after spending hours rotting my brain collecting all the sites.

I had a look through Yesterweb a few months ago. I was kind of excited when I first heard about Yesterweb. I've been on the Internet forever and I'm nostalgic for the simpler Internet of the 1990s where everything wasn't so centralized. There are still a few old style websites I visit every so often, such as one where this guy is just really into radios and reviews radios he buys. I was like, "A web ring full of that kind of shit? Heck yeah!" Imagine my surprise as I kept clicking random and instead of getting "Justin's WCW Fansite" or "Bill Plays and Reviews Every NES Game" I got a barrage of tranny and furry shit. Not the autism I was hoping for.

Great thread OP!
Personally I follow a few neocities users that give me a laugh on the regular. One of them is desperate to be featured on kf or the other farms and I don't want to give them the satisfaction. Many of the people on these sites keep a close look on both sites to see if they're mentioned.
My personal favourite is now the long gone Strawbabie (lullabye, tumor, dreamie, dollie, gyarutrait, corpsetrait - she went under many aliases on many platforms). She showed up on neocities sometime last year and started wreaking havoc in the small community. Her favourite hobby was shit stirring and making callout posts on whoever she deemed problematic enough which got her a lot of attention. She barely worked on her site(s), most of the time she spent arguing in the neocities status updates section. All of the neocities teens became her mindless followers and didn't question a single statement she posted because she carefully constructed the most overpowered victim armor. She was mixed race, jewish, romani, schizo, she had DID, autism and all other possible mental illnesses, along with being intersex and disabled. Undefeatable. There's a few pages that documented her rise and fall if anyone wants to give it a read. She single handedly made a lot of disgruntled adults quit neocities or move hosts because of her cowish behaviour.

Her old about me pages here and here

Her sperging through status updates here and here

Dreamwidth article on her
A whole tumblr blog dedicated to taking her down

Keep in mind the sources are written in a very tumblrite friendly way because anyone that spoke against her in a slightly un-woke manner would immediately be dismissed by everyone she managed to brainwash into her small cult of yes-men. All of her friends ended up turning against her once it was found out she was an evil whyte (the ultimate crime), which is hilarious because she posted so much blatantly aggressive bullshit that was a-okay while she was considered a half black jew. In the end she had to be eaten up by her own.

You're right, tumblr is still the home for all types of tradthots and evil terfs after all. Moderation used to be even more lax, but you could (and still can) find all kinds of stuff there. It is true though that tumblr amplified modern lgbt discourse where it festered until it exploded on twitter after the porn ban.

holy shit lmao, I'm almost in awe of this woman
Despite her being ridiculously autistic this is actually kind of impressive, thank you for telling me about it
I wonder if her followers still spout her rhetoric to this day?

Double-posting to say: I added a small section about Madness to the individual people's section and modified the disclaimer!

I wonder if her followers still spout her rhetoric to this day?
Actually they don't and the moment she disappeared most of the neocities discourse quieted down. Even her "closest" friends were quick to discard her, albeit quietly. I do remember a few people speaking up about being shocked but granted they were actual gullible 12 year olds.
