Sucks that Districts of Neocities went down, that was one I liked clicking through. I guess the webmaster just got tired of keeping it up.

I am and always will be deeply confused as to why kids seem to be so into gender shit. Everything it's based off of is just so stuffy and dull. So's the fashion, for that matter, mental illness haircuts and plaid as far as the eye can see.

Come to think of it, why are kids into Neocities? Where are they coming from? And why are all their sites so fucking lame? CSS has an animation function. If these pipsqueaks were really into this whole eyeburner pastel bullshit, then why the fuck don't they go all in? Make that shit spin, assholes, come on, do it.

At their core, personal sites like this are a kind of digital scrapbooking, and webrings are knitting circles. Seeing people run around, talking about how cool they are because they joined the local arts and crafts club, on pills, with some bullshit knots made out of perfectly good yarn, at the age of six-fucking-teen is as cringe as it is depressing. I know self importance and trying too hard is part and parcel of being a teen, but it would all be so much better if they would just let themselves have fun.

I was going to write a long explanation but it's already been done to death and is pretty easily-accessible in any thread where someone questions it.

The long and short of it is:

• Gender shit is trendy now, and teenagers (+ any kid who excessively uses social media) really want to follow trends.
• Gender shit has stuck around for so long not only because it's being very loudly encouraged by most adults (especially the "top dogs" that kids are taught to always listen to and respect: doctors, scientists, heads of state), but because it also gives teenagers and children purchase when entering any kind of debate because "minorities need to be listened to above all else". They get automatic protection from almost any kind of criticism because of their protected status and are praised by default solely for doing nothing more than stating that they belong to a certain group.
• This automatic protection is, of course, most popular amongst the extremely insecure or self-loathing, leading to the excess teenage population and the remaining adult population being made up of mentally ill freaks. It's also especially popular amongst the previously-abused and their abusers for obvious reasons.
• Said freaks don't care about who you are as long as you aren't straight and white- they solely care about sex- leading to many mentally ill people who wouldn't be accepted anywhere else coming out to find a community. (Not sure if this is brought up much, but I'm including it because i've experienced it by proxy and it is unfortunately an extremely good way to find someplace to belong without putting in much effort to develop communication skills beyond the most basic.)
• Stuffiness/dullness isn't a problem if you were raised with the stuff, which I think plays into why a fair amount of ex-fundamentalists tend towards this shit (aside from the usual rebellion against the parents). It's more comfortable to avoid constantly stepping on LEGOs if you were raised to avoid stepping on eggshells your entire life. It's also worth noting that none of these people think they're being stuffy and dull at all- every single one of them thinks they're being a unique individual by proclaiming their love for "weird" shit like opossums and axolotls, despite those being quite possibly some of the most mainstream "weird" animals you could ever think of. They seriously think they're "silly lil guys that nobody understands" despite exclusively hanging out with 30+ clones of themselves on a regular basis. Literal hivemind shit.

Twitter and tumblr mostly. A few people on those sites who were already using Neocities started propping it up as a "social media alternative" when the Troubles began, and since online children have no free will they all followed whatever big slacktivist or fanfic writer was moving from social media to Neocities (for exactly 2 days) without question. They don't give a shit about Neocities- just the fact that they're "doing the right thing" by not being on social media. The only exceptions to this rule were the code kiddies who were already interested in web development and took the opportunity to properly learn it (which is a good thing for them but not so much normal people who want to use the platform).

That exodus is also the reason for this. Nobody actually cares about the websites- just the fact that they're not on twitter/tumblr anymore. Hence the abundance of carrd copy-pastes, neverending template websites (almost always derived specifically from sadgrl.com), and rampant unoriginality across the board. Every single person just copies from every other person endlessly and nothing original is ever shat out (especially not without being plagiarized by the nearest 20-something complaining about code theft while participating in it constantly within several minutes of its creation).

I found a website with a fake-but-functional Windows 7 UI page at one point after sorting through 100+ Carrds and thought it was super cool and original in comparison.
Then I saw that exact same page with different text in the boxes on another person's page soon after.
Then another.
And another.
With the exact same execution almost every single time.
They didn't even change the fucking background.

Same went for a pixelated cat that sat in the top left of your screen and followed your mouse if you clicked it. Same went for extremely cluttered homepages made to look like messy corkboards or piles of notes. Same went for little jukeboxes made to control autoplay on any given webpage, or the bobbing white dragon beanie baby gifs. Same went for so so so much shit that at this point you'll find on 95% of active websites.

This also goes for the vast majority of content on these sites. Every site has an About Me, a Diary, at least one (but usually multiple) Shrine(s), multiple Webrings, a Links page with a bunch of Blinkies and Buttons...
Every quiz result is the same. There's a bunch of maybe 20-30 quizzes relating to the most popular fandoms and then the animal webpage guardian quiz from one of the site's most popular members.
There's also the same few recurring topics: Likes/Dislikes/Sexuality in a Character Form format, Bucket Lists (this trend is newer so not as widespread yet but it's on a lot of the transring webpages lol), "Kins" and ships, extreme leftist rhetoric... it's all so tiresome.

the long and short of it is that there were less minors than I expected, but the minors were always the more fucked-up members by a mile. if someone wants to pick up where I left off for whatever reason, I went to every site listed on the members list in order up until squeezeoats.neocities.org and found 23 confirmed minors (out of 38 sites; 45 total, 7 were dead links or didn't give any info on the webmaster)
almost all of them were some kind of genderspecial other than a straightforward ftm/mtf (mostly the former if not), and they used xenopronouns more often than the 18+ demographic

It's the same webpage as before (it has the same stats, tags, and author), but "of" was changed to "off" and the site solely consists of a black screen and a gif of a rotating rat now (that I can't copy-paste because it keeps turning into an image so here's an archive instead).

According to the user profile, the site "died" 2 weeks ago and was already inactive for something like a year and a half prior.

A spiritual successor has arisen by the name of NeoCities Neighborhood, hilariously advertising that Linux is preferred for viewing at the top (with Preferred being misspelled). Worth noting that it already existed for a few years before now- it's just taken the place of the Districts since its death, from what I can tell, and is still being updated as I write this (most recent addition was 3 weeks ago).

There are currently 90 members of the webring, most of which seem to be minors. I’m talking, like, 2000-2004 here, made by other teenagers and college students, cliques/webrings, art, little pixel images you could “adopt”, etc. The kind of stuff that the Neocities crowd would probably claim they were taking inspiration from. There’s a few things that stuck out to me in retrospect:

First, it was actually kind of rare for them to have full-fledged profile anywhere on them. Most of them were pretty limited to things like a name, a few various favorite things, maybe an email address for contact. I don’t think I saw one that even mentioned the webmaster’s sex, outside of maybe elsewhere in passing or mention of their real life first name. Most of the “about” pages honestly talked more about the website/domain itself.

Second, unlike a lot of these modern Neocities sites, it was really uncommon to see a bunch of different content all mashed onto the same website. It was much more typical to see one person run several websites, each with their own layout and purpose. (A clique/ring, a site specifically for one of their hobbies, a site for their artwork, etc.) That's actually one of the reasons having your own domain name was kind of a status symbol. In a weird way, it's kind of a metaphor for what's happened to internet content as a whole over the years. (Just toss it all into one big pile and let The Algorithm™ sort it out... or not.)

It's just not how people share their work anymore.

Holy shit, I had no idea that people outside of the Neocities scene were even aware of the loonytroons over at Yesterweb, but I guess if anyone would be, it'd be you guys. Neocities itself isn't all bad, and even Yesterweb itself had some cool people in the early days before it turned into some weird Marxist tranny cult, but there are an unreal amount of deranged people in this space who honestly warrant individual threads of their own on here. The fact that an internet nostalgia group devolved into a zoomer filled tranny drama cult full of pedophiles and general freaks is outright bizarre as most of these people weren't even alive when Geocities and Angelfire were at their peak, so I have no clue what got them into the idea of the "old web" in the first place. It's like the whole thing is a weird caricature of what 16 year olds think the Internet was like in 2003.

You know I had a good introduction to these weirdos as my first experience with Yesterweb was when a friend of mine who owns a rather popular Neocities site got harassed by some of the people involved in it a few years ago. From what I remember him telling me at the time, he got an email from someone asking him to "show support" by placing a trans visibility banner on his website or something, and when he politely refused as "(his) site has nothing to do with politics" they quickly shifted tone and he got his inbox relentlessly spammed by a shit load of people trying to strongarm him into caving into their autistic shitflinging and started threatening him and his wife. I don't remember how long this went on for, but I know it ended in him joining their Discord to find out exactly who in their group was organising it and promptly telling them to fuck off via their personal emails, lol. I know he came out of it completely unbothered, though. At the time he seemed to find the whole thing pretty amusing, but started to get sick of it when his inbox essentially became unusable due to the spam he received from them. Madness.

In typical troon fashion, they also apparently have a really bad habit of targeting actual women who run websites as well, and there's now an entire webring of TERF women that formed as a direct result of them receiving harassment from Yesterweb trannies over something to do with pronouns/gender identity politics (I think?) Maybe someone who's more clued up on that whole shitshow could fill in a little bit in this regard, as I might be missing a few details about this specific incident, but I know it was something along those lines.

Why anyone would think that they're entitled to control what someone else has to say or share on their own website is utterly bewildering to me.

The problem is, anyone who's not a poser can just rent a cloud VPS and enjoy total control over the instance, so sites like Neocities will inevitably cater to the bottom of the barrel.

It's not 1999 anymore when GeoCities was the option. Now you can simply buy a VPS that blows Neocities out of the water. They're talking $5/mo for 3 TB bandwidth and 50 GB disk space, when I can easily pay less for 20 TB bandwidth, 40 GB space, 2 CPUs, 4 GB RAM, dedicated IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, and have root access to my own instance. The entire business model caters to retards.

In the current year, you can even point a CNAME record to a GitHub Pages repo and enjoy essentially unlimited bandwidth and storage for free. There are so many options available that using Neocities is inherently an extremely intentional choice made by a very specific type of person.
