Far Cry 5 actually had some really competent writing. See below, since I fucked up my original reply. The game wasn't even that pro conservative, there were a couple of Trump jokes sprinkled in.
No, their problem was that the cult wasn't Christian Trump supporters lynching minorities. A lot of these people were practically salivating over the thought of getting to gun down "bigots", but they got pissed when they found out the cult was just a doomsday cult that used an utterly bastardized take on Christianity (and had some black members in their ranks).
Thus, they took their anger out on the game by docking points off their reviews for it being too "cowardly" and "apolitical".
The cult makes a lot of sense in terms of its multiracial composition. The writers took many aspects of the Project at Eden's Gate from other cults, primarily the Rajneeshis, in terms of taking over a rural area, but you also get a lot of influences from other cults like the Jim Jones cult as well as the Branch Davidians. They take a few jabs at conservatism, but they actually treated rural conservatives with a lot more respect than I expected. To go back to my point about the composition of the cult, it was founded in Louisiana, it wasn't some homegrown Montana movement. Competent writing takes you a long way. It's the same shit as when journalists were up in arms over Left 4 Dead 2 because so many of the zombies were black, when it's literally set in Louisiana.I'm playing through Far Cry 5 right now, actually. And yes, the 'conservatives' (that you rescue, defend, and recruit) are just a bunch of redneck country folk clad in stars and bars. Sharky asks at one point if the "orange guy with bad hair" is still President. Leftover notes and audio logs refer to Eden's Gate as a bunch of freedom hating hippies, but every militia group, in both the Resistance and the cult, is multiracial.
So yeah, it's obvious they just wanted an outlet where they could kill paranoid caricatures of the people they hate. It's apolitical because Christ if they just can't have fun and blow shit up without it sucking them off first.
I like the game a lot, by the way. I have found one quest so far that I cannot finish because it's glitched.
The Far Cry team is actually really good in terms of writing, and I think they get far less credit than they deserve for it.
