I don't understand this "password leak". The passwords in the database should at least be salted and hashed. I'm pretty sure this is the default for XenForo. I don't know how you can screw that up. Brute-forced passwords is a lazy excuse for a sysadmin to give. Brute-forcing in reality, especially over the internet, is not very practical or likely.

Is it possible whoever is doing this is lying about a password breach and is really just hijacking sessions?

Now as some words of advice; never, ever use an email that just reads 'yournamehere@thisiswhereIwork/study/theplaceIliveat.com' when you sign up for things such as social media, forums, or things related to entertainment (in this case it's video games) because the moment these types of email usernames and even IP Addresses are obtained then you can considered yourself doxxed by that point.

RetardEra, being complete absolute morons as well as complete pieces of shit, actually forced their users to dox themselves this way, despite obviously being completely untrustworthy scumbags.

Session hijacking is more likely than extracting passwords out of the DB. The idea that these are re-used passwords from other breaches is a possibility, but it's near impossible for a sysadmin to confirm that with certainty. Root cause analysis is hard, especially when you're more interested in stopping the attack than actually figuring out with certainty what happened.

A sysadmin worth their salt (and being appropriately funded) would pro-actively do the things I've already listed. Clearly something is happening based on random people's accounts being used to post messages. If we are to believe the staff that everything is good server-side, clearly too many people are re-using passwords and someone is actively taking advantage of this. They should do a reset.

I'm pretty certain Resetera doesn't even fully know even if their stabs in the dark are half-truths or not.

edit - The admins have pulled the site down it seems, they genuinely have no idea what they're doing. It's almost as if coming out confident as fuck and then getting embarrassed wasn't a good look.
