Like all of the rules there, there's no rhyme or reason to it. Most of the mods lurk here. Hecht has said he regularly looks at this thread.

Whenever RejectEra discusses UBI requirements, it often includes enough in rent to pay for these soy-enriched hipster enclaves. That or they just demand killing off enough landlords until it’s cheap enough for the UBI to cover costs.

You're forgetting the best part: this fool was "working" for some website for two years without getting paid. And he had the courage to turn away from jannying do a journalism due to his principles.

Depending on your field, it certainly isn't unheard of for a writer to publish without compensation, but I don't see how anyone could comfortably do that regularly for years. I wonder if he's getting paid at the new site (probably not).
