Honestly, I remember the big fight for video games to be recognized as an art form, but I'm pretty sure majority agreed that video games are largely for entertainment and shouldn't be taken so seriously. They largely wanted the same protections afforded to movies and books. We got that, we moved on. It seemed the games journalists and their sycophants took a big huff of paint and screamed, "WE'RE ART CRITICS NOW! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!", though. Kamiya likely never cared since America, but I imagine he's in the same boat as us.

Although he wishes he had his own boat.

You wanna know my take on the whole "games are art" debate?
If games are art then that'd mean we'd have to hold such great hits like Sonic 06, Superman 64, Big Rigs Over The Road Racing, and pretty much any "unanimously hated/terrible" video game on the same high regard as classics and innovations such as Wii Sports, Halo, and Half Life.

Anyways this salt mine is hilarious. Where were they when Miyamoto said "Games aren't art, they're products" and when Kojima said that art "Isn't as subjective as video games"

I personally think that games can be art. Ones that tell great stories like Planescape or KOTOR, or are mechanically significant for their genre like the Arkham games or Persona. But they have to earn the right to be called art.

Why do they even care, though? Art is subjective. There's a reason "one man's trash is another man's treasure" is a popular saying and it's not just because dumpster diving is the new form of dabbing.

Actually, in all seriousness, they care because they are at the end of the day hipsters. If games aren't art, then there is no bragging rights in being the only one to have played whatever low effort indie wankfest they think is real gaming and thus nothing to put them on a higher plateau than all those unwashed, sexist, racist, transphobic normies who play COD or Battlefield or Witcher or Kingdom Come.

A game can look, sound, and feel pretty. But I don't give a fuck about any of that if the game is unplayable garbage and I'm too busy trying to reload a save because I clipped through the ground.
