It's been a while since I read Burning Chrome, but didn't the narrator have a one-off with his partner's girlfriend at one point too? It wasn't outright stated but it sure as hell was implied.
Not disagreeing with your argument, but I remember how it kinda set the stage of things; despite the changes that transhumanism and augmentation can wreak upon people, sometimes they still reach for the common human element (in this case, getting laid).
I still think Count Zero was far more disturbing at times, what with one of the main characters getting blown up by a suicide-bomber dog and spending a few weeks in a virtual sensorium while the surgeons put him back together (including having to buy eyes and genitals on the market). :horrifying::horrifying::horrifying:
You're allowed to disagree with me. This isn't resetera. I won't tattle to the mods because you hurt my fee-fees.
I believe it's implied that she played them both to get what she needed: money and a ticket to Chiba so she can get those Zeiss Ikon eye implants like all the hot celebrities in the Sprawl universe have. In this case, cybernetic implants are coveted. But only if you have the money for the good ones.
Which also ties into a scene in Count Zero. Turns out if you work for the Big Media Company and you die they send out a mid-level manager to gouge your eye implants out of your head. Because they're technically owned by the company. No different from turning in your company laptop when you quit.
Yea you're rich and famous and get to fly around the world shooting the equivalent of a VR reality show, but you're still beholden to the machine. Even after death.
