I disagree that there was no 'indie' scene, but it probably didn't look like the current 'indie' trend today. Sierra, for example, pretty much started out in Roberta Williams's kitchen. Fewer hipsters, more people willing to put their shoulders to the boulder.It helped that there wasn't an indie scene to speak of, such that all games coming out were from serious studios putting out serious effort games so the quality was usually higher than it is today. On the other hand, as you say, game journos actually played the games to completion back then and got good/wrote guides for some of the companion mags or strategy guides. I miss the 80's & 90's era publications, before the internet really ruined it.
I admit I don't miss having to pay for gaming guides and FAQs. I treasure an encounter I had in a bookstore where I explained to a teenager that he didn't need to buy the Prima guide for FF7, and that there was a MUCH better guide on this website called 'GameFAQs'.
