TBH, a part of me wishes Kanji was gay just because it was refreshing to see (what I initially thought was) a gay dude who acting like a relatable idiot rather than the usual trope of being a condescending fairy.

Instead we got a whole character arc for a punk to learn it's okay to like cute things? At least that was my take away when I played it 10 years ago.

But unlike reeeeset era types I just shrugged and went on with my day because I don't need videogames to validate my life.

There's a scene on a beach where two overtly gay men hit on Ryuji and MC that they get all uppity over. Yusuke says weird things but he's not gay so that's a problem. Characters accept their insecurities and try to work around them, rather than bending the world and everyone else at their will to tell them how much of a good job they're doing. Japan is also backwards and Savage to them BUT EVERYONE ELSE IS A XENOPHOBE for saying anything about another group of people.

Ignore the tastefully done drag queen though, that would ruin their narrative.

The problem is that gay dudes are trying to pick up young (all characters are still in high school) dude in an aggressive fashion.

In addition to this - none of the characters in the "main" persona games (3, 4, and 5 - I don't like it either don't fucking @ me) are gay. None of the relationships are gay and all of the characters are canonically straight (and frequently even have implied pairings, assuming the MC doesn't mess it up). People got really, really mad about it in Persona 4 because they went full bore with leaving SJW checkboxes unchecked (fat chicks are gross, the coded gay dude isn't gay, the coded trans girl realizes she's going to make a huge mistake).

This "vaguely gay scene at a beach" in Persona 5 was also repeated from Persona 4 and Persona 3 - but these idiots miss that the characters in your party are supposed be immature because they're school kids in shitty situations, not grown adults that are supposed to know better.

To be fair, and it isn't super common, but some games do punish you for playing on "easy".

Some games make fun of you (Wolfenstien, MGS, etc), but some other games will lock you out of stages/endings for playing on easy. It isn't a super common thing these days, being locked out of stages, but it still happens from time to time.

Usually the thinking seemed to be the easy mode was like the "tutorial".

The worst thing to me is when the "normal" difficulty setting that everything is balanced around is stupidly easy, but the "hard" mode obviously wasn't even thought about, so you have a still easy game with giant HP bars or what have you...

Persona 4 also even went so far as to be realistic about all the above.

Fat girl is just as ugly for having a terrible personality as she is for her looks. In fact, most of her disgust comes from the former, the latter just makes the former more obvious.

Kanji is just a manly man scared his sensitive side made him look like a wuss, and his fears were shown as him blowing them out of proportion and that his insecurities were that he looked gay for his feelings. His being attracted to Naoto before the reveal she was quite womanly only compounded things because he didn't realize he was attracted to someone much like himself who he THOUGHT was a guy.

His arc makes perfect sense when you accept it for what is IS, not for what headcanon you give it.

Naoto's arc makes sense when combine her obvious insecurity over how being a girl means she has to try harder to be taken seriously is mixed with Japanese cultural mores, where police work is a highly male dominated role on the investigative end and she felt she had to try harder for a woman to be taken seriously there.

Her insecurities manifested as a naive assumption a sex change would make her life better, but she came to realize she was blowing her insecurities out of proportion and that she didn't hate being a woman in and of itself.

Yakuza 2 has a similar character (the female cop Kaoru who teams up with Kiryu for a large part of the plot) who also feels the need to prove her balls as just as big if not bigger than her male contemporaries for similar reasons, and like Naoto also works on the sharper end of the police business.

Again, makes sense in context it was written, not the headcanon you want it to be.

God, reading some of the comments is like hearing a mean girls clique snipe behind the back of the talented girl at lunch. I've been watching Appabend videos covering the same subjects, and I for the life of me can't seem to figure out why SJWs and their ilk are targeting the Persona series of all things. Persona is actually quite forward thinking and progressive for something made in the Japanese cultural mindset (see Erika and the aforementioned drag queen character), with many forward thinking themes (for a Japanese cultural product) like not exhibiting a complete and utter deference to authority figures and even opposing them, especially if they are corrupt, which is downright revolutionary for a culture where deference for authority is baked into the language and hard grained into society, and people tend to not stand up to authority figures who are wrong. But instead of focusing on all the positive messages, the SJWs have taken to demanding that this particular Japanese title go out of its way to cater to their completely fucked ideology, demanding the inclusion of LGBT characters, demanding that the game change to assert their beliefs, for no other reason than "Let's just pick on Persona". Not some Japanese titty game, which are a dime a dozen. Persona.

I might look at it the wrong way, but with how 3,4, and Catherine handled gay and trans situations (hard to include actual characters due to them mostly being one offs), none of it was shocking. Personally I wouldn't expect a company to just up and become a woke ally and handle all of these things with the nuance they want because the West has been moving in that direction. The lens that these people look at it through is hyper-focused on the characters personality being their sexuality and purely built around that, rather than building a character with personality traits who are also this or that and incorporating it into the bigger scheme.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a gay party member (less likely) or confidant (more likely) in 6 whenever they get around to it, but there isn't going to be a middle ground for these people if that happens. Its going to be "Oh its just tacked on that (s)hes gay so it doesn't really count", "(S)He's a just an offensive caricature of gays" or "(S)He's gay but they don't do enough with and its a problem.". Its just odd and irritating to see people wanting to morph a product that has a history of this and yet spend the time and money on it and act surprised about it.

I know this is built off someone just asking about the problems Era had with it so there's no specific example, but Era always talks about not supporting this or that company for how they handle things and yet always end up buying it anyway and talking about how offended they are. Just fucking follow through for once. There are level headed people out there who can have issues with these things and bring it up in valid ways but its not really the approach you see from Era at any point. It doesn't help the actual issues because they tend to drown out and condemn anyone looking from both sides of the aisle of being gay/trans/whatever and having issues with these characters and situations while still being okay with the product and voicing their opinion.

Good summary. SJW types getting mad at Persona 4 has always bugged me for quite a few reasons. Mainly because it really shows just how fucking hypocritical they are. Lots of social links end up this way but with Naoto and Kanji in particular their stories are actually very progressive/inclusive, all the things REE parrot about wanting from entertainment. It really shows just how much they don't actually care about the shit they say, they're just basic attention whores.

Also I am not even sure if the problem is headcanon in some cases, some of the REEing we've seen over the years came from people who seemed to legitimately think Kanji's story was about being gay or that Naoto's was about being trans. Like they're too stupid to figure out those are just vehicles used to get to the main point of the story.

It's just an extension of the SJW 'you will never please them, so don't even try', as well as the obsessive fannish ability to find decently-portrayed characters and headcanon them to being the opposite of what the actual, real canon has.

From what I understand not having played them, the Persona games are about the characters and their relationships, to themselves and each other. Part of the point is you get to explore them quite deeply, and they are well-drawn characters you can empathise with. Which is catnip to a certain kind of SJW, because they can have waifus and husbandos and invest emotionally in fictional characters because that's much easier than showing any empathy or understanding for real people. It also doesn't hurt that SJWs often gravitate towards only the most popular forms of entertainment, because they have basic, shallow tastes.

As you point out, once they've decided that this is something for them, it then has to change to suit their desires. Because it's well-made and popular, they insist it has to cater to them, and declare it offensive when it doesn't, and bigoted when they rewrite the plot in their head but the actual plot doesn't match up. As has also been said, they're never actually part of the hobby, in this case gaming. So they don't want to find games that match their requirements, they want the games they see to always fit within their rigid, narrow worldview. People actually interested in gaming enjoy searching for the type of game that scratches their itch.

So they don't know about the dime a dozen titty games, and don't actually care that they exist because they're not popular enough for them to feel like they're missing out if they don't play them. There's also not much to be gained from railing against something obscure; if you have to explain what you're mad about before explaining why you're mad, most people just aren't interested (as perhaps anyone who has tried to explain a shitcunt they've seen on the Farms to a normie friend might have experienced).

tl;dr: You see it in everything - movies, TV, books, games, so on. They find the better products that are most popular, and insist it cater to them and only them, because unlike the actual audience, they deserve to be exclusively pandered to because they're morally correct. They're shallow narcissists who go for the lowest-hanging fruit, which in this case includes Persona.
