I’ve never seen an online user community with a bigger sense of self-importance than the GAF stalwarts who moved over to REEEEEE.

They're up there. I think Something Awful ('the site that made the internet funny') and Metafilter ('the smartest site on the internet') both huff their own farts to a great degree, and both have a lot of the same characteristics as ResetEra: a complete buy-in to intersectional identity politics, constant displays of the heckler's veto and oppression olympics, a main page filled with doom and gloom and that attacks anyone who doesn't want to be angry at the world all the time, an orthodoxy you must adhere to 100% or you'll get sanctioned/punished/unpersoned, a 'more woke liberal than thou' userbase while still constantly hunting for the evil GamerGate/incel/alt-right fascist Nazis that they believe are secretly posting all the time, and an inability to let even the smallest thing go.

They're the kind of sites that make it look like a good idea to, every month, ban something like the five most frequent posters for a time - because they always seem to be the ones who stir up the most drama, make everything about them, and spread their toxicity throughout the site in general. The content on the site would go down, but I'm thinking it would improve, especially if it shut up assholes like excelsiorlef and RedMercury.

Power users often define a site, but in the case of these obnoxious hugboxes, that's a very bad thing. And there really is a silent majority thing going on, where the few histrionic cases who make a big deal about flouncing off the site or how it's infiltrated by Nazis means that larger and larger numbers of the userbase just quietly stop visiting; it stops being worthwhile to try and make the site more like how you want it, and the bits you actually enjoy get taken over, and so the userbase shrinks to untenable numbers while the die-hards can't understand that it's them that are the problem, not the imaginary impure that are keeping them from having their woke utopia.
