Adam Ruins Everything host Adam Conover (who I've never heard of before, but apparently he's got some cred in games j**rnalist circles) puts out a Twitter video and small thread concerning Microsoft's ambitions in the games industry following the Activision Blizzard buyout. He says what anyone paying attention figured out from the Bethesda buyout, if not when Microsoft started pushing Gamepass in the first place.
That the service - for which we have at least one outright conformation is not profitable - is probably a massive money sink hole that is being subsidized solely by Microsoft's monopolistic business in the way of Windows OS and IT pipelines/infrastructure; and that said losses cannot be sustained by the likes of Sony or Nintendo. By offering such a deal that is too good to be true, Microsoft is aiming to undercut the games market in its entirety and price out competitors, while shifting the way in which people consume games into a streaming-subscription regime.
In other words, do exactly what Microsoft did with Windows in the 90s, and what they've been doing with Office 365 in the 2010s. When they've got their new vertical, the honeymoon period will end and they'll jack up the prices, all while fostering an environment where games are worse than they are now.

Much of Reeee balks at the notion and accuses Conover of fearmongering and "jumping to conclusions", when Phil "Blanket Ban" Spencer and Nadella have all but said it on numerous occasions. "Going after 3 billion gamers" this, "Keep out tech giants from harming the game industry" that - and seriously, Spencer said that shit after the Activision announcement. People should also remember that is was only last year that Microsoft tried doubling the price of Xbox Live Gold overnight, and backtracked after a wave of internet rage. That is not the kind of thing a subsidiary making a profit would try and do.
