Since there's not a lot of trustworthy evidence out there on the topic I have to go by my own life experience, which goes something like this: When I'm out and about in the world, which is quite often thankfully, how often do I see males playing some form of videogames like say, on their phone, tablet, portable dedicated gaming device, laptop, etc. VS. how often for females? It's not even close... easily 80% or 90% males in that scenario. That doesn't account for all situations but in my mind it's enough to give you a rough measure of where each sex generally lies when it comes to interest in videogames. And by interest I mean... the desire to play them for yourself and even by yourself, and not just when you are trying to appeal to the opposite gender (something I've seen many females do with gaming, they will play to relate to males occasionally but they won't play for their own interests and on their own time)I do think probably a high percentage of women do play vidya, particularly mobile games, but I'd guess most of the ones that do are not fanatic about it. They just do it to pass the time and generally see it as kind of a waste of time when you could be doing other things. Like, they're not thinking about the story, they just want to beat the next candy crush stage or get enough points to customize their characters with fancy clothes.
You may argue "well you aren't accounting for stigma which is why you probably see fewer playing outside of a private environment" okay, maybe, and I'm willing to take that into account.
I'm not going to sit here and say it's definitely 80 or 90% males... I just don't at all buy the 50/50 argument that gets peddled around, PARTICULARLY when we are talking about console and pc gaming.
